Manchester City reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time courtesy of a 0-0 draw at home to Dynamo Kiev, sealing a 3-1 aggregate victory. However, the win came at a cost, with centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi both going off injured.
City went into the game with a 3-1 lead from the first leg and looked in complete control throughout a first half that lacked anything even resembling a chance at either end. And a subdued atmosphere at the Etihad wasn’t helped by Kompany pulling up with a muscle injury just five minutes into the game. The City captain was stony-faced as he left the field, and he was joined in the changing rooms shortly afterwards by fellow centre-back Otamendi with what looked like a less serious injury.
Dynamo needed three goals to avoid a European exit and threw on an extra striker for the second half, but it was City who created the game’s better chances, with Sergio Aguero shooting narrowly wide and Jesus Navas striking the post with a low drive.
The celebrations at full-time were muted, but this result heralds a new dawn for Manchester City, who now wait for Friday’s quarter-final draw to see who they face in the last eight of the competition.

TALKING POINT

Reason to celebrate? Joe Hart was all smiles at full-time after keeping a Champions League clean sheet and helping his club reach the quarter-finals but the furious look on Sergio Aguero’s face told a different story. This was not a good performance by Manchester City, and while they did more than enough over the two legs to progress, there were quite a few signs that the club’s turgid league form could cross over into their European campaign. Who got the reaction right – Joe or Sergio?

MAN OF THE MATCH

Sergio Aguero (Manchester City): This was not Sergio Aguero’s finest 90 minutes, not even close to it, but the few moments of attacking spark that there were in the game came from him. A Cruyff Turn in the second half was the highlight of the match.

KEY MOMENTS

5’ – INJURY: Vincent Kompany is down, staring blankly into the distance. There was no contact, he just pulled up while running for a clearance and immediately put his hand up to signal for a sub. The disappointment radiates out of him.
14’ – OUCH: Otamendi and Buialsy are both down after a collision that was fair but painful. The two of them receive treatment before hobbling back on.
21’– INJURY: Otamendi hasn't been moving right ever since that earlier challenge. He takes a knee and the physios help him from the field.
58’ – WIDE: This is much better from City. Aguero is played in down the right and makes himself a yard of space to drill in a shot that flies narrowly past the far post.
60’ – POST: Navas gets the ball out of his feet and slams a shot across the goalkeeper and onto the base of the post. The Etihad oohs and aahs and appreciates having something to get excited about.
85’ – SAVE: Hart makes a big save to snuff out any lingering Kiev hopes. The visitors appeal in vain for a penalty, but they know that their race is run.
