Ten-man Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League last 16 for the seventh season in a row as Bayern Munich secured a 5-1 victory at Emirates Stadium to emphatically clinch the tie.
The Gunners were faced with a mammoth task to overturn the four-goal deficit from the first leg, but went in at the interval with a slither of hope thanks to Theo Walcott's thumping strike.
In reality a place in the quarter-finals was already beyond the hosts, but a red card for Laurent Koscielny for hauling down Robert Lewandowski for a penalty just after the break changed the complexion of the evening.
Arsene Wenger's hopes of salvaging pride, amidst the backdrop of protests for him to leave the club outside the stadium, were dashed as Lewandowski killed the tie for good by coolly converting from the spot.
The visitors then ran riot with Arjen Robben, substitute Douglas Costa and Arturo Vidal (2) clinching a 10-2 success on aggregate.
It was an all too familiar capitulation for the Gunners. They had fallen away badly when Koscielny left the pitch injured in Munich three weeks earlier, and while this time it was a sending off, their naivety with 10 men led to another humiliation.

The result will do little to quell the dark mood surrounding the club at present with questions over Wenger's future set to intensify in the coming days.

TALKING POINT

Forget talk of officials, Arsenal lack backbone and Wenger's in deep trouble.
Wenger may point to Walcott's penalty shout in the first half and the fact the referee changed Koscielny's card from yellow to red following consultation with the official behind the goal. But what is really striking is how the Gunners buckle once it goes against them in high-profile matches.
The last half an hour of both legs of this tie illustrate the lack of backbone in the side and is the reason they consistently come up short in the title race and Europe. They go missing when the going gets tough and it's a familiar story that means a growing number of Gooners want a new man at the helm to help pen a different ending. Wenger deserves better than some of the chants heard outside the stadium before kick off, but it's hard to see how even an FA Cup triumph will see him turn it around this time.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Arturo Vidal (Bayern Munich). Took his two goals well and was a real menace on the counter attack as Arsenal fell apart at the back.
