Teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe scored twice in Germany but a late goal from Shinji Kagawa gave Borussia Dortmund hope in a 3-2 defeat at home to Monaco.
Both teams played their part in an enthralling contest to ensure the truly disturbing attack on the Dortmund team bus which forced the postponement of the initial contest was ultimately overshadowed. The home side wore t-shirts in tribute to Marc Bartra who underwent surgery following the incident but it was the home side’s performance which will make the Dortmund defender most proud.
Thomas Tuchel’s charges were on the end of two harsh decisions in the opening 20 minutes as referee Daniele Orsato awarded Monaco a penalty which Fabinho sent horribly wide. The visitors did make the breakthrough moments later when Kylian Mbappe tapped in at the back post from Thomas Lemar’s cross but the French forward looked like he was in an offside position.
Then a calamitous own goal from Sven Bender, who replaced Bartra in defence, gave Dortmund a mountain to climb as Monaco extended their lead before the break.
But the fight-back commenced. A double change at the interval prompted a response from the hosts and Ousmane Dembele scored on the hour mark to give his side a huge boost. However, Mbappe restored Monaco’s two-goal advantage with a spectacular goal with 10 minutes to play.
Dortmund would have the final say however as former Manchester United midfielder Kagawa grabbed a late goal to set the second-leg up perfectly.

TALKING POINT

Were Dortmund ready to play so soon after such a traumatic event? Thomas Tuchel said his side wanted more time to recover from Tuesday night’s disturbing events and questioned UEFA's decision to play the match only 24 hours later. Marc Bartra’s replacement Sven Bender had a shocker and was subbed off at half-time. It begs the question, were Dortmund psychologically prepared for this match and was it right for them to be forced to compete?

MAN OF THE MATCH

Kylian Mbappe (Monaco): The French forward was simply irresistible and capped a world class performance with two goals. The 18-year-old has the world at his feet.
