Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has hit back at Paul Scholes after the legendary midfielder claimed he was "embarrassing" the club.
United turned out another desperately dire performance with a goalless draw in their Champions League clash with Valencia on Tuesday evening with many fans booing at full-time.
Scholes said he was "surprised" that Mourinho was still in the Old Trafford hot seat and said he was "embarrassing" the famous club.
"I'm actually slightly surprised he survived after Saturday, the performance was so bad," he told BT Sport.
"He's coming out in press conferences constantly having a go at players, having at go at people above him because he's not getting what he wants.
"I think his mouth is out of control and I think he's embarrassing the club."
But Mourinho has hit back at Scholes, suggesting that he is not interested in his opinion - and only views of fans should be respected.
"He has freedom of speech just like anyone else, just like the fans who were chanting ‘attack, attack’ in the second half," he said.
I am not interested in that, I don’t need to know what Paul Scholes said.
"People can say what they like, especially Manchester United supporters, because I respect their point of view."
Asked whether his team were critically low on confidence, Mourinho was not convincing.
"There are things it is difficult for me to say, I do not want to attract any more criticism for being too open,” he said.
"I would prefer to say that last season we finished second in the league, were runners-up in the FA Cup and topped our Champions League group.
"I thought that was a fantastic season and I know the reasons why.”
