A late goal from Heung-min Son - his second in two games at Spurs’ new ground - gave his team a useful lead from a strange, insipid game. Both sides lacked imagination and conviction, but Spurs played with the greater intensity and will fancy themselves to finish the job in Manchester.
City began in unusually circumspect fashion, sitting off Spurs who weren’t quite good enough to take advantage. Then, on 11 minutes, Sterling wriggled across the face of the box, shot low, and as Rose slid in to block, took the ball on the hand; after consulting VAR, the referee pointed to the spot and, in the eyes of this observer, had little choice in the matter. Up stepped Sergio Aguero, only to telegraph precisely where his penalty was a going and without applying sufficient power for it not to matter; Hugo Lloris plunged left to save with relative ease.
Ten minutes into the second half, Spurs lost Harry Kane - perhaps for the rest of the season - his ankle twisting as he fouled Fabian Delph unnecessarily.
So City upped the tempo slightly, dominating possession but without creating much in the way of chances, and then, with 12 minutes to go, the increasingly influential Christian Eriksen clipped a lovely ball into the box to Son who, seven consecutive touches later, drilled the winner through Ederson.

TALKING POINT

Why does Guardiola overcomplicate? It's now eight years since City's manager won the one with the big ears, and tonight showed a chunk of the reason why. City are better than Spurs by a distance, and more than that, have their number in the direct match-up. Yet instead of sending his men out to do what they usually do, Guardiola picked a defensive side instructed to play passively, and got exactly what he deserved.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Heung-min Son (Tottenham Hotspur) Not one of his better all-round efforts, but no one else stood out and it was his intelligence, perseverance and timing that made the difference.

PLAYER RATINGS

Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris 8, Trippier 6, Alderwireld 6, Vertonghen 6, Rose 7, Sissoko 6, Winks 5, Eriksen 7, Alli 6, Son 8, Kane 5. Subs: Moura 6, Wanyama 6.
Manchester City: Ederson 6, Walker 6, Laporte 6, Otamendi 5, Delph 5, Fernandinho 6, Gundogan 5, Silva 4, Sterling 5, Aguero 4, Mahrez 4. Subs: Jesus 6, Sane 6, De Bruyne 6.

KEY MOMENTS

10’ - Sterling wriggles across the face of the box, coming in off the right touchline and evading Trippier with embarrassing ease. But Rose deflects the shot behind, and City have a corner … VAR are checking for a potential handball from Rose. This is a thrill. How did we do without this.
11’ - The ref is going over to check, and Rose is in trouble! He went to ground, the ball hit his hand above his head as his body was horizontal ... and IT'S A PENALTY TO CITY! Rose is booked…
13’ - HUGO LLORIS SAVES IT! Aguero opens his body, telegraphing a kick to the keeper's left; he plunges that way and shoves clear, with ease! Who expected a miss like that from a man like that?!
55’ - Kane chases Delph to the touchline, Delph clears, and Kane piles through him - he's totally nobbled his ankle here, and goes straight down the tunnel before Spurs can even get a sub ready. That's not at all good for them, and though it shows how wholehearted he is, he really didn't need to get involved there - I'm not sure we'll see him again this season.
78’ - GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Manchester City (Son) Well! City have been dictating, but suddenly Spurs find something! Eriksen lifts a luscious pass into the box,to meet the run of Son, coming from out to in. His first touch is heavy, but he keeps the ball in on the line, cuts back, checks, and drives through Ederson! That's very poor from City - Son had seven touches in a row, in their penalty box! Two in two for him at the new ground! What a player!

KEY STATS

Spurs have got through a European knockout tie on the last nine occasions they've won the first leg.
Son has 18 goals in 40 games this season; last season, it took him 53 to achieve the same number.
