Borussia Dortmund beat Atletico Madrid 4-2 on the night and 5-4 on aggregate to dump Diego Simeone’s men out of the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage. The result meant the Bundesliga club make the last four for the firs time in 11 years. Julian Brandt, Ian Maatsen, Niclas Füllkrug and Marcel Sabitzer scored the goals to send Edin Terzic’s side through.

Borussia Dortmund reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 11 years after a thrilling 4-2 second-leg victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
Dortmund trailed 2-1 on aggregate coming into the match and led the tie for the first time when Julian Brandt and Ian Maatsen gave Edin Tezric’s side a two-goal lead in the first half.
A triple change from Diego Simeone at half-time turned the game on its head, as a Mats Hummels own goal and a thumping Angel Correa strike put Atletico back in front in the tie.
But in less than five minutes the pendulum swung again and back into Dortmund’s favour. Niclas Fullkrug guided a wonderful header beyond Jan Oblak to put Dortmund ahead in the match before Marcel Sabitzer drilled the Germans into the lead on aggregate.
The hosts managed to hold on to seal their spot in the semi-finals where they will face Paris Saint-Germain for a place in the final at Wembley Stadium, after Luis Enrique's side came from behind to beat Barcelona.

Talking point - A Champions League classic

What a game. What a tie. It is easy to forget that Dortmund were losing 2-0 in the first leg before Sebastian Haller grabbed a goal back, and then Brandt struck the woodwork in the dying minutes.
They started Tuesday’s game brilliantly and swiftly earned the lead in the tie but were pegged back after some fantastic in-game management from the experienced Simeone. But even after Hummels made the mistake that gifted Atletico a path back into the game, Dortmund never gave up.
For all of Atletico’s qualities in defence, Signal Iduna Park is a desperately difficult place to go in knockout circumstances and Dortmund proved it once again, striking back emphatically to move past the robust Spaniards.

Player of the Match - Marcel Sabitzer (Borussia Dortmund)

Sabitzer was back to his best on Tuesday and played a huge role in Dortmund’s fightback, not once but twice. With one goal and two assists in the game, Sabitzer became the first Austrian player to be involved in three goals in a Champions League knockout match since 2004.
And it all came after he missed a huge chance in the opening minutes. He shrugged off the frustrating moment to set up Maatsen’s strike, before producing the cross which Fullkrug emphatically finished.
Then he wrapped up the tie with a brilliant strike of his own to put Dortmund within one round of the final.

Match highlights

3’ - HOW HAS SABITZER MISSED?! Dortmund break forward and Karim Adeyemi finds Marcel Sabitzer in the six-yard box who has the whole goal to aim at, but sluggishly takes a touch which allows Cesar Azpilicueta to make a monstrous block. He should have hit the ball first time and Dortmund should be ahead!
5’ - NOW MORATA HAS MISSED A SITTER! Following the early scare, Atletico respond well and Greizmann sends Morata through on goal with a header. He gets away from Sabitzer but as he tries to dink it over Gregor Kobel, sends it wide! Two HUGE chances at the beginning of this one, but it remains 0-0.
33’ - GOAL!!! - DORTMUND 1-0 ATLETICO (BRANDT): Dortmund are level on aggregate! Atletico fail to clear their lines and Hummels find space to place a magnificent pass over the top with the outside of his boot to Brandt at the back post, who brings the ball down well before squeezing it past Oblak from the tightest of angles. Dortmund lead on the night!
39’ - GOAL!!! - DORTMUND 2-0 ATLETICO (MAATSEN): Dortmund quickly grab their second and now they lead the tie! They get down the left again as Ian Maatsen breaks into the box following an excellent back pass from Sabitzer, before he drills the ball across goal and into the bottom right corner!
49’ - GOAL!!! - DORTMUND 2-1 ATLETICO (HUMMELS OWN GOAL): Atletico have one back and they're level in the tie! Hermoso heads a cross back across goal and Hummels sticks out a leg to block it, but can only guide it past Kobel and into his own net at the near post. What a time to make such a costly error!
58’ - HUGE CHANCE FOR ATLETICO! Koke slots a superb ball through to Correa who produces a perfect first touch to take the ball in his stride to break past the Dortmund defence, before slotting the ball wide of the right post! What a chance, Simeone is on the floor!
64’ - GOAL!!! - DORTMUND 2-2 ATLETICO (CORREA): Wow! The tie turns on its head again! Kobel makes a big save to deny Riquelme, but Correa is in the right place at the right time to slam home the rebound at the second time of asking! Atletico now lead on aggregate in what is becoming a Champions League thriller.
71’ - GOAL!!! - DORTMUND 3-2 ATLETICO (FULLKRUG): Dortmund are not done yet! Brandt slips the ball down the left for Sabitzer to run onto and he pulls a clipped cross back for Fullkrug to delightfully head beyond Oblak to put Dortmund back in front! We're level on aggregate once again. Incredible.
74’ - GOAL!!! - DORTMUND 4-2 ATLETICO (SABITZER): Can you believe it! Dortmund have another one! The ball drops to the midfielder on the edge of the box and he shifts it onto his left foot before rifling an effort into the bottom right. As things stand, Dortmund are heading through!
80’ - WHAT A STOP FROM OBLAK! Fullkrug bursts through on goal but Oblak stands firm to make what could be a vital save! The Dortmund forward really should have put the tie to bed there and then.
