There was redemption for Harry Maguire and Andre Onana as the former scored and the latter saved a last-minute penalty as Manchester United collected a 1-0 win against FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford. The dramatic finish capped an emotional night at Old Trafford, with this the first home game since the passing of club legend Sir Bobby Charlton over the weekend.

A Harry Maguire goal and Andre Onana penalty save rescued Manchester United's UEFA Champions League campaign as the Red Devils beat FC Copenhagen 1-0 in what manager Erik ten Hag had identified as a must-win game.
Copenhagen started far better than the hosts and hit the post after just five minutes through Diogo Goncalves, while five minutes into the second half they came close again, only to be denied by a super Onana save.
Half-time substitute Christian Eriksen forced an equally good save from Copenhagen's goalkeeper soon after, and was then central to the goal.
When Maguire headed an uninspired United into the lead on 72 minutes, he was nodding home a pinpoint cross delivered by Eriksen.
It sparked a much better closing 20 minutes from the home side, but their hard work was set to be undone when the visitors - with the minimum four minutes of added time up - were awarded a penalty for a Scott McTominay high boot.
However, Onana saved Jordan Larsson's penalty, getting a strong hand to the shot to keep it out and produce his best moment to date in a United shirt.

Man United now have three points and are third in Group A, a point off second-placed Galatasaray. Copenhagen are bottom on one point and Bayern Munich are top with three wins from three.

Talking point - Scapegoats salvage United's Champions League campaign

Onana and Maguire have both come in for plenty of criticism in their time at Old Trafford. Onana's displays in this competition in particular have attracted bad reviews as he made errors against both Bayern and Galatasaray, while the metaphorical cloud over Maguire's head has been there for more than a year. Yet tonight they were the heroes.
These are the kind of dramatic and emotional moments which can change the narrative around a player and indeed the trajectory of a career. Both Onana and Maguire will hope this game is the start of something larger than just one good night.

Player of the match - Christian Eriksen (Man United)

The hosts' midfield had much more balance after he came on and the cross for Maguire's goal was excellent. Unlucky not to have scored himself, too.

Match highlights

OFF THE POST! 5' - Elyounoussi wins 50-50 tackles versus Amrabat and Maguire to burst through on the right before crossing to Goncalves, who opts for a side-footed finish and beats Onana going back across the goalkeeper - but the ball hits the post.
SAVE! 50' - Copenhagen counter-attack well and the ball is cut back to Lerager on the edge of the box, who hits it toward the top corner, but Onana makes a super save to keep the ball out.
SAVE! 54' - Hojlund sets up Eriksen with a smart layoff and he drives a low shot which arrows for the bottom corner - but Grabara makes a stunning reflex save.
GOAL! MAN UNITED 1-0 COPENHAGEN (MAGUIRE) 72' - After a corner is half-cleared, Eriksen sends the ball back into the box and onto the head of Maguire, who nods in at the back post. What an important goal for United and what a player to score it!
PENALTY TO COPENHAGEN 90+5' - A corner comes to Oskarsson who hooks it towards the back post, where Elyounoussi and McTominay challenge. Neither gets the ball, but McTominay's high foot maybe gets Elyounoussi in the face, and a penalty is given!
PENALTY SAVED! 90+7' - Larsson takes the penalty, stutters his run-up, and when the left-footed shot comes it is saved by Onana!
