It was utterly heartbreaking for Newcastle United after they were denied a famous victory very late in stoppage time in their UEFA Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes. The manner of the draw will be tough to stomach for the visitors with a controversial handball decision made for the penalty kick, which Kylian Mbappe converted at the death.

Kylian Mbappe fired home a controversial penalty deep into stoppage time as Paris Saint-Germain rescued a 1-1 draw and denied Newcastle United a famous win at the Parc des Princes in UEFA Champions League Group F.
The Magpies looked to be on the brink of a victory that would have left their destiny in their own hands, but a VAR intervention led to a harshly awarded spot kick for a hand ball against Tino Lavramento that allowed the Ligue 1 champions to level in the 98th minute.
Luis Enrique’s side were keen to try and avenge the 4-1 drubbing they suffered at St James’ Park earlier in the campaign and made a lightning start with Fabian Ruiz and Mbappe going close.
However, The Magpies rode out the initial storm and then silenced the boisterous home support on 24 minutes when Alexander Isak tucked in the rebound after Gianluigi Donnarumma spilled Miguel Almiron’s 20-yard shot.
PSG were left frustrated for long spells, but when they did manufacture an opening, they were thwarted by the imperious Nick Pope until the last-gasp drama led to the cruel twist that denied the visitors all three points.
The result means Newcastle sit third in Group F on five points. PSG are second on seven points with leaders Borussia Dortmund, who are now through to the last 16, on 10 points. AC Milan are fourth on five points with an inferior goal difference.
Newcastle will now conclude their Group F campaign at home to AC Milan on December 13 in the knowledge that they need Dortmund to do them a favour when they host PSG if they are to reach the knockout stage.

Talking Point - Mixed emotions for Newcastle

At the start of this Champions League campaign, if you had offered Eddie Howe a scenario that would see Newcastle have a chance of qualifying from the so-called ‘Group of Death’ heading into the final match of the pool at home to AC Milan, he may well have ripped your arm off - and despite all the controversy in the immediate aftermath of this contest, that is now the case after what was essentially a ‘do or die’ mission in Paris.
They knew a defeat would be the end of their dream, but they produced a heroic display with a squad rather depleted with injuries, to come away with some hope. However, it could and perhaps should have been more. They rode their luck and seemed set for a famous win that would have left qualification in their own hands.
Instead, fate intervened with a penalty award that has been met with strong comments from the TNT Sports experts and across social media, suggesting The Magpies were robbed.
It’s a tough one for Howe and Co to swallow, but they still have a chance and will aim to regroup for one last push in the group finale next month.

Player of the match

Nick Pope (Newcastle United). The Newcastle stopper is eager to earn his place back in the England squad, particularly with Euro 2024 on the horizon, and a performance like this certainly won’t do any harm to his cause.
This was an imperious display of goalkeeping as he produced a string of excellent stops, including one truly great save to keep Mbappe and Co at bay, until the late penalty drama robbed him of a memorable shut out.
