Grant Leadbitter had put the visitors ahead with a slightly fortunate goal as his cross found the net off the inside of the post in the 27th minute.
But Dougie Freedman's side, who tasted defeat for the first time under the new manager at Charlton in midweek, again showed their character as they made it six wins from eight games under the Scot.
Gary Gardner hammered a spectacular 34th-minute equaliser, before Dexter Blackstock provided a neat turn and finish to secure all three points with a second goal 20 minutes after the interval.
The defeat made Boro drop out of the top two, while the victory helped Forest close the gap on the top six to just nine points.
Derby were denied top spot in the see-saw battle for automatic promotion as Birmingham struck twice in stoppage time to clinch a 2-2 draw at the iPro Stadium.
Jamie Ward and Tom Ince - his sixth in eight games for the club - struck in either half for Steve McClaren's side, but Paul Caddis converted a 93rd-minute penalty and Clayton Donaldson headed an equaliser in the sixth minute of added time.
Bournemouth, who had jumped into pole position following Friday night's 5-1 win at Fulham, retained their overnight lead.
Watford captain Troy Deeney saved his side as he rescued a point for them against promotion rivals Wolves in a pulsating 2-2 draw at Molineux.
Deeney struck after 65 minutes as he scored for the fourth successive match to take his goal tally for the season to 16.
Both sides ended the game with 10 men after two red-cards in stoppage time - Tommie Hoban seeing red for Watford after collecting a second caution and Bakary Sako being dismissed for pushing over Fernando Forestieri after he had been challenged by the Argentinian.
Watford twice had to come from behind against an eager Wolves side who have seen their promotion hopes hit after collecting just a point from their last two games.
Lewis McGugan's third goal in five games secured Sheffield Wednesday a 1-0 victory at the bottom side Blackpool.
The Watford loanee struck nine minutes after the break for the Owls who have now won three of their last four league games.
Conversely Blackpool, who are now 17 points off safety with just 10 games to go, are winless in eight and rarely troubled to end that run at Bloomfield Road.
Midfielder Kari Arnason scored one and made another in a rare away win to earn 10-man Rotherham a 2-0 success at Huddersfield.
Arnason tucked in a rebound on 44 minutes after his shot from a Jack Hunt cross came back off a home defender.
The Swedish-born Iceland international, a key figure in only a third away victory all season, then helped create his side's second for Conor Sammon.
He burst forward on 60 minutes and played in Lee Frecklington, who teed up Sammon for a 20-yard low drive.
The relegation-troubled side, fourth bottom before play, had not won at Huddersfield since 1964.
Wigan's mini-resurgence hit a roadblock as Alex Mowatt's goal tipped a tight encounter the way of Leeds, who won 1-0 at the DW Stadium.
The Latics had won back-to-back away matches at Blackpool and Norwich in the last week to reduce the gap between themselves and safety to only six points with 11 matches to go.
But their home misery - they have not won a game on home soil since August 30 - continued to leave an eight-point buffer between themselves and fourth-bottom Fulham.
Midfielder Jonny Howson struck his fifth and sixth goals of the season as Norwich piled on the misery for Millwall with a 4-1 win at the New Den.
Gary Hooper struck from the penalty spot and Wes Hoolahan was also on target, while Lee Gregory's late penalty was scant consolation for Ian Holloway's side.
Ipswich striker Daryl Murphy's 22nd goal of the season was cancelled out by Brentford midfielder Jonathan Douglas's header before half-time in a 1-1 draw at Portman Road.
And Federico Macheda's opener for Cardiff was cancelled out by Tony Watt before Yoni Buyens' late penalty clinched Charlton a 2-1 win at the Cardiff City Stadium.
