Alexis Sanchez and Ruslan Malinovsky scored the goals as Marseille dumped PSG out of the Coupe de France courtesy of a 2-1 win at the Stade Velodrome.
With Marseille second but eight points behind PSG at the top of Ligue 1 and having finished bottom of their Champions League group, the Coupe de France represents OL’s last realistic opportunity to mark Igor Tudor’s first season in charge with a trophy.
The home side took the lead from the penalty spot with just over 30 minutes gone after Sergio Ramos felled Cengiz Under. Sanchez took the responsibility from the spot, waiting for Gianluigi Donnarumma to commit before stroking his effort the other way.
PSG rallied as the half drew to a close. First, Lionel Messi had Pau Lopez scrambling when a typical whipped free-kick arrowed its way towards the top corner. However, with the keeper rendered a spectator, the ball dropped the wrong side of the post from a PSG point of view.
Moments later, Neymar collected the ball from Messi and fired an effort on goal - it came back off the post. Just as it looked like the hosts would make it to the interval with a one-goal lead, Ramos made amends for his earlier indiscretion when he rose highest to head a Neymar corner past Lopez on the cusp of half-time.
Another defensive lapse just shy of the hour mark cost PSG when they failed to adequately clear a Sanchez effort. The weak clearance fell to Malinovsky on the edge of the box, who unleashed a thunderous left-footed effort past Donnarumma to re-establish his side's lead.
PSG continued to probe for an equaliser, but Marseille remained a threat on the break, and Under almost added a third late on, but his effort on the turn was just over.
Ramos thought he had levelled again in added time. The former Real Madrid defender headed home after a Nuno Mendes cross came back off the crossbar; the goal was ruled out for offside, condemning the 14-time winners to elimination in the round of 16.
