Bayern Munich 0-3 RB Leipzig: Harry Kane debut ends in disaster as Thomas Tuchel’s side stunned in German Super Cup

It was not the debut Harry Kane would’ve been hoping for at Bayern Munich as his new club were humbled by RB Leipzig on their home ground on Saturday night in the German Super Cup. Dani Olmo was the Leipzig hero, with the Spanish forward netting a superb hat-trick. Kane came on in the 64th minute with Bayern two down, but he was not able to work miracles as his side’s charge petered out.

Kane expresses delight after securing move from Tottenham to Bayern

Dani Olmo gate-crashed Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich debut, hitting a stunning hat-trick to earn RB Leipzig their first-ever German Super Cup.
Named on the bench alongside fellow summer Bayern arrival Kim Min-Jae, Kane had to wait over an hour before entering the game for Mathys Tel to rapturous applause from a packed Allianz Arena.
But by that point his team were already 2-0 down after Olmo had opened the scoring just three minutes in, and doubled Leipzig’s lead just before half-time with a brilliant solo goal.
And just seconds after Kane’s introduction Olmo was given the opportunity to complete a memorable hat-trick thanks to a Noussair Mazraoui handball in the Bayern penalty area.
The Spaniard coolly slotted his spot-kick under Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich, on a night to forget for the Bavarians.
Olmo had stunned the stadium into silence early on with a well-taken poachers goal, David Raum’s fantastic delivery into the box was too much for Joshua Kimmich to handle and the ball sputtered to Olmo, who levelled a powerful shot past Ulreich.
The reigning Bundesliga champions struggled to deal with set-pieces all game, despite Kim’s introduction at half-time, and that came back to bite them later on with Mazraoui’s error allowing Olmo to kill the game off.
In between it was largely wasteful dominance for Bayern, interjected by a memorable second goal for Olmo.
He took the ball inside the penalty area on the verge of half-time and ghosted past Matthijs de Ligt and ex-teammate Konrad Laimer with a delightful spin, before driving his shot low into the net.
It was clinical brilliance that Bayern could only dream of. Serge Gnabry was the standout player for the home team and created a string of chances in and around the penalty area, but none of his teammates could take advantage.
Tel, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane all missed gilt-edged chances before Olmo’s penalty put the game to bed.
And it largely fizzled out in the last 20 minutes, neither side willing to risk too much with the result decided.

Talking point - Harry Kane’s wait for silverware goes on

It would’ve been the ultimate irony for Kane to endure 13 trophyless seasons at Tottenham only to break that silverware drought in his first game at a new club.
But it just wasn’t meant to be. Already up against it before Kane’s introduction, he hadn’t even touched the ball before Mazraoui conceded the penalty that effectively ended the game.
Kane could only watch from the edge of the penalty area as Olmo slotted home, and that’s how he spent most of the rest of the game too.
Tel was wasteful in front of goal but he was on the same wavelength as Bayern’s creative outlets, particularly Gnabry who fashioned a number of chances for the Frenchman.
That was in stark contrast to Kane, who looked exactly like a player who’d spent just a matter of hours at Bayern before making his debut.
He barely influenced proceedings, but it should be a different story once he has some training under his belt.

Player of the match - Dani Olmo

Who else? Olmo lit up the match and rightly received a standing ovation when he left the pitch, having completed his job with 15 minutes to spare.
Starting ahead of Kane as the lone striker, Mathys Tel missed an abundance of chances at the other end of the pitch and ensured all of Bayern’s possession and pressure went to nought.
By contrast, Olmo looked dialled in from the first minute. He pounced on Benjamin Henrich’s knock-down to set the tone for the game, which allowed Leipzig to soak up pressure and look to counter.
That in turn gave Olmo the space to work his magic for Leipzig’s second, as the visitors rushed forward and Bayern didn’t get the chance to properly set before he’d cut through their defence.
The Spaniard was barely visible for large parts of the game but he didn’t need to be; he was there in all the big moments when it mattered.
