Igor Akinfeev was hit by a flare thrown from the crowd in the opening minute of the Montenegro v Russia Euro 2016 qualifier.
As the goalkeeper was struck he fell to the ground injured.
Players left the pitch and the match was instantly suspended.
The match was restarted after half an hour, with the stadium announcer warning that the Group G match would be abandoned if there was any more crowd trouble.
Sadly, that came to pass - with more trouble breaking out after Roman Shirokov missed a late penalty.
Russian television reported that Akinfeev had been examined by a doctor and taken to hospital.
However, the players left the pitch calmly and with no apparent sense of urgency - with some people claiming on social media that the goalkeeper was conscious.
Igor Aknfeev, 28, has been Russia's number one goalkeeper for several years, earning over 75 caps and playing at the World Cup in 2014.
He has spent his entire club career with CSKA Moscow, whose academy he joined at the age of just four.
