One of the stadium officials was hit as a flare on the pitch went off as he approached it and English referee Mark Clattenburg was forced to halt proceedings and pull the players into the centre circle.
Croatia players appealed to their fans not to cause any further trouble but fighting broke out in the stands and the stadium announcer had to ask for calm.
