UEFA Euro 2024: Who has qualified? How do the play-offs work and who is guaranteed a spot?

England and Scotland were among the sides to book their place at UEFA Euro 2024 during the October international break.

The neighbouring nations got the job done nice and early, with two more matchdays yet to come in November.

As it stands, nine of the 24 Euro 2024 places have been grabbed but there is still all to play for as the qualifying campaign reaches its conclusion.

Teams across Europe are still battling for a top-two spot in their group to be guaranteed a place in Germany next summer.

However, next year’s play-offs will offer one last chance at qualification to three sides who fail to make it through the traditional path.

Now would therefore be a good time to ask - who has qualified for Euro 2024 and how do the play-offs work? Allow us to explain.

There will be 24 teams at the UEFA European Championship, split into six groups of four.

Germany, as the host nation, are the only team to automatically qualify.

From the Euro 2024 qualifiers, 20 teams qualify directly – the top two from each of the 10 qualifying groups.

That leaves three places, taken by the winners of play-offs that are linked to 2022/23 UEFA Nations League performance – more on that to come.

Competing in the play-offs will be 12 teams, split into three play-off brackets of four teams each - one each for Leagues A, B and C based on performance from the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League campaign.

Originally these four spots were allocated to the four group winners in each League, but as Nations League group winners qualify through the normal route, their positions will be handed down to the next-best ranked team in their League.

The League A group winners were the Netherlands, Croatia, Spain and Italy.

Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Scotland were the League B group winners, while Georgia, Greece, Turkey and Kazakhstan won the groups in League C.

That means those 12 teams were guaranteed a play-off spot before the Euro 2024 qualifiers began, but since then Spain, Scotland and Turkey have secured automatic qualification and there will therefore be changes by the time the play-off paths are decided.
