But a late header from Bafode Diakite ensured Lille's chances of progressing to the semi-final are alive going into the second-leg at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Unai Emery is a veritable master in European competitions, winning four Europa League titles. His side are hot off the heels of a 2-0 win over Arsenal, damaging his former employers' Premier League title chances.
Lille, who sit fourth in Ligue 1, haven't played since the 2-1 loss at Villa Park and will be fresh for a feisty second-leg. The French outfit have lost just once at home this season and Villa will be in for a tough test if they are to clinch a semi-final spot.
