Roma overcame Feyenoord to book their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League following a penalty shoot-out victory in the Italian capital on Thursday night. Gimenez put Feyenoord ahead in the opening five minutes before Roma midfielder Pellegrini produced one of the goals of the season to equalise. After a draining 120 minutes, the tie went to penalties and Roma came away victorious.

Nicola Zalewski struck the winning penalty as AS Roma booked their spot in the UEFA Europa League last 16 with a shoot-out victory over Feyenoord after the second leg of their play-off clash finished 1-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.
The Giallorossi prevailed 4-2 on spot kicks after goalkeeper Mile Svilar saved from both David Hancko and Alireza Jahanbakhsh, despite a surprising miss from Romelu Lukaku.
Roma had been favourites to progress on home turf after Lukaku rescued a 1-1 draw in the first-leg in Holland, but it was the visitors who silenced a partisan home crowd when Santiago Gimenez’s rapid reactions saw him divert an improvised finish into the back of the net on just five minutes.
Lorenzo Pellegrini quickly restored parity with a sumptuous curler 10 minutes later before the match lapsed into something of a stalemate with both sides struggling to generate openings.
Extra time was inevitable and Lukaku went close to winning it in the 120th minute before the lottery of penalties saw Svilar's heroics send Daniele De Rossi’s side into Friday’s draw for the last 16.

Talking Point – Feyenoord are sick of the sight of AS Roma as last year’s finalists sneak through

There was so little to choose between the teams and Feyenoord’s staunch defence had threatened to make it third time lucky against the Italian favourites.
Indeed, UEFA Europa Conference League final heartache two seasons ago was followed by a quarter-final loss to Roma last term too, meaning these two teams know all about it each other and perhaps the familiarity is why they cancelled each other out.
It was nervy times for De Rossi, but he continues to lead Roma on an upward trajectory since taking over from Jose Mourinho, with a deep run in this competition and improvements in their Serie A form key objectives in the remainder of the season.

Player of the match

Mile Svilar (AS Roma). The home shot stopper had little to do in the match itself but he came up trumps with two huge saves in the shoot-out to turn it in his team’s favour.
