Rooney gets three-matches

The Manchester United forward was shown a straight red card by German referee Wolfgang Stark for kicking Montenegro's Miodrag Dzudovic off the ball during Friday's 2-2 draw which saw England reach the finals as Group G winners.

It had been expected that UEFA would hand Rooney the three-game suspension after following their disciplinary regulations to the letter, and England now have three days to appeal the verdict once they have received the full decision in writing.

The FA said they would wait to learn the full reasons before deciding on a response.

"Further to UEFA's decision to impose a three match suspension on Wayne Rooney following his sending off against Montenegro, the FA await the full reasons from the disciplinary committee, and will give full consideration to the decision internally, before deciding on any response to UEFA or making any further public comment," read an FA statement.

A statement released by UEFA read: "The striker will now be suspended from playing in his country's next three UEFA national competition matches for which he would be eligible."

UEFA's control and disciplinary body made their decision late on Thursday afternoon, and as a result Rooney will miss all England's group matches at the Euro 2012 finals next summer.

Rooney, who was also sent off in the 2006 World Cup, was playing one day after his father and uncle were arrested and bailed by police over an alleged betting scam.

The FA now face a conundrum as to whether to appeal the decision, with UEFA holding the right to increase any ban if it is deemed to be 'frivolous'.

Manager Fabio Capello, who defended his decision to pick Rooney for the game, has already said that Rooney would not start in any of the warm-up friendlies before the tournament.

Capello described the kick as a "silly mistake" as Rooney was sent off for the first time in any European competition for six years.
