Wigan reach first FA Cup final as trouble erupts among Millwall fans

Wigan scored a goal in each half to reach their first FA Cup final with a comfortable 2-0 win over Championship side Millwall in their semi-final at a saturated Wembley - but the match was marred by fighting among Millwall fans.

Scotland midfielder Shaun Maloney gave the Premier League team the lead on 25 minutes when he dashed on to a lovely cross from Arouna Kone to convert with a well-executed volley.

Roberto Martinez's side dominated possession for the rest of the first period and, despite some huffing and puffing by Millwall in the second half, Wigan secured their spot in next month's final at the national stadium when Callum McManaman scored a superb second goal on 78 minutes.

He showed some real awareness to collect Jordi Gomez's pass before rounding Millwall goalkeeper David Forde to slide the ball into the vacant net.

Wigan will face a tougher test when they return to Wembley on May 11 to face Manchester City or Chelsea, who contest the second semi-final at Wembley on Sunday.

It said enough that Millwall could not unearth a shot on target throughout the 90 minutes, but they should be content with their run to the last four.

They collected £450,000 prize money from losing this match, but never really had the quality to oust their opponents.

The game ended on a sour note with a bloodied fan visible among the Millwall support, some of whom seemed to battle with policemen in the away end. One fan ended up smiling with a policeman's hat under his jacket.

Some young fans were visibly distressed by the trouble.

More will no doubt be heard about that in the hours and days ahead. Especially coming at the home of English football.

Wigan were worthy winners on the park.

They showed their menace on 13 minutes when Forde tipped a McManaman shot wide of goal before Maloney struck with his expert finish falling under Forde from eight yards out.

Forde was needed to prevent a Gomez shot from finding the net on 40 minutes before Millwall mounted a brief recovery after McManaman had walloped the ball over the bar from inside the Millwall area on 50 minutes.

They came close to finding a goal on 63 minutes when Mark Beevers saw a header deflect off Paul Scharner and drop over while James Henry flicked a free-kick a couple of yards over.

But Wigan finished the strongest side after McManaman added the second goal and only a fine stop from Forde prevented Kone from adding the third goal in the death throes of the contest.
