Memphis Depay netted his first goal for Manchester United following his £25 million summer move from PSV Eindhoven, as Louis van Gaal's side beat MLS mid-table strugglers San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 in the International Champions Cup pre-season tournament at the Avaya Stadium.
The Netherlands international played behind main striker Wayne Rooney in the Number 10 position for the opening 45 minutes of the match in California, and although the link-up play between the two was far from telepathic, there was enough in the embryonic partnership to suggest the two might gel in the Premier League this season.
Depay, the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season with 22 goals, opened his United account with a cool finish past San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham after being gifted possession on the edge of the area by a poor Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi backpass.
Depay's strike put United 2-0 up following Juan Mata's opener, but Dominic Kinnear's side pulled one back before the half-time break when Fatai Alashe poked the ball past United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, following some slack defending down the left touchline by Morgan Schneiderlin.
United replaced every outfield player at the break, and the game inevitably suffered a slump in intensity as a result, with the only goal coming just after the hour mark through Andreas Pereira's header from Jesse Lingard's cross.
KEY MOMENTS
5' – SAVE! Bingham smothers from Rooney after spilling Memphis' initial shot after a good run on the edge of the box. Mata cannot make anything of the rebound.
9' – CHANCE! Shaw crosses to Rooney after a reverse pass from Young down the left, but it is behind the England captain and Memphis cannot gather the loose ball.
31' – GOAL! San Jose Earthquakes 0-1 Manchester United. Mata tries a shot from outside the area from Young's cut-back from the left and the ball trickles into the corner - it might have got a touch from Memphis in the six-yard box but Mata is receiving the congratulations.
38' – GOAL! San Jose Earthquakes 0-2 Manchester United. Memphis nets his first goal for United when he skips past Wynne following a misplaced backpass from Pierazzi and slots the ball past Bingham.
41' – GOAL! San Jose Earthquakes 1-2 Manchester United. Salinas beats Schneiderlin down the right before cutting the ball back for Alashe to poke home past Johnstone.
43' – PENALTY SHOUT! Another attack down the left channel from Shaw, but Mata sees his shot blocked by San Jose defender Goodson on the line, possibly with his hand.
45 +1' – SAVE! Bingham saves with his feet from the right-hand side of the six-yard box from Memphis' shot after another move down the left by Shaw. And that is half-time.
48' – CHANCE! Former Liverpool Academy graduate Marc Pelosi is off target following a move down the right, after a Schweinsteiger mistake.
54' – SAVE! Blackett feeds Pereira on the edge of the box and his optimistic effort is awkwardly blocked by Bingham.
60' – GOAL! San Jose Earthquakes 1-3 Manchester United. A first goal in the first team for Andreas Pereira, who heads in from Jesse Lingard's cross.
70' – CHANCE! Pelosi tries an effort from 30 yards that drifts over the bar, following a flick round the corner from Thompson.
82' – CHANCE! Schweinsteiger floats a pass through the centre but the ball holds up and Wilson is unable to make the most of the opportunity.
TALKING POINT: Will 2015-2016 be Luke Shaw's breakthrough season at Manchester United?
Much of United's attacking threat in the first half at the Avaya Stadium came down the left flank, with full-back Shaw linking well high up the pitch with winger Ashley Young.
England international Shaw may have done enough in the two matches against Club America and San Jose to earn a start against Tottenham in United's Premier League opener at Old Trafford on 8 August.
Louis van Gaal preferred Marcos Rojo on the left-hand side of United's defence last season, and publicly criticised former Southampton defender Shaw for a perceived lack of professionalism over fitness issues.
Nonetheless, van Gaal feels the 20-year-old is a more potent threat going forward than Argentina international Rojo, who may be rested for the start of the season after playing in all six matches of his country's run to the Copa America final this summer.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Memphis Depay (Manchester United) The Netherlands international, described by new team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger as "an unbelievable talent", will not lack self-belief at Manchester United, even if he is coming into an Old Trafford dressing-room full of big-name players.
Manager Louis van Gaal has already hinted that the 21-year-old, who has that cockiness that seems to be a feature of the top Dutch footballers, will play in the withdrawn role behind main striker Rooney this season.
Depay's positional play against the Earthquakes was excellent, even if he and Rooney didn't quite gel as a combination, and he showed great poise in taking his goal.
