The Harry Kane story has been one of the season’s most extraordinary tales, the fringe player turned Real Madrid target and England’s next big hope.

But just how good is the Tottenham striker compared to other bright young things who have set English football alight in previous years?
Kane is still just 21, turning 22 in July, and his Premier League record stands up very well indeed, even if it is somewhat limited.
We asked Opta to provide us with the details of the strike-rates of those Premier League players who have scored over 100 goals in the competition when they were under the age of 22.
We limited the search to players who made their debuts in the Premier League era, ruling out the likes of Alan Shearer and Andy Cole. Of the players listed, only Nicolas Anelka, at 20, left the Premier League before his 21st birthday.

Kane’s comparative lack of goals is a clear feature. Having had loan spells with Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester City, his first-team exposure at Tottenham was rather delayed.
Players such as Wayne Rooney, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen were playing regular football in their teens. But still, after scoring a flurry of Europa League goals in the first half of the season, Kane has fully capitalised on the chance finally afforded to him.
And now his strike-rate is bettered only by Owen and Fowler among the players to have scored a century of Premier League goals, both of whom scored at an incredibly impressive rate after coming through Liverpool’s academy.
Perhaps the nearest comparison is Darren Bent, who scored at exactly the same rate of 0.44 goals per game in the Premier League prior to his 22nd birthday, and from the closest number of games – 27 to Kane’s 34.
Bent – who also scored plenty of goals in the Championship with Ipswich before turning 21, not measured here - currently has 106 Premier League goals, but only 18 of those came in a rather disappointing two-year spell with Tottenham between 2007 and 2009.
Kane will be hoping for rather more longevity in the Tottenham attack, but clearly he has a bright future ahead of him.
