Xherdan Shaqiri’s stunning overhead kick was the highlight as Liverpool claimed a comprehensive 4-1 win over Manchester United in front of over 100,000 fans at The Big House in Michigan.
Jose Mourinho was missing a number of key figures, with Jurgen Klopp able to pick players like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah from the start. There were also club debuts for Brazilian midfielder Fred and new Liverpool summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri.
Mane gave the Anfield side the lead from the spot after a foul by Demetri Mitchell, with Andreas Pereira equalising not long after through an astonishing freekick from 20 yards out. However, it was Liverpool who took a grip of things in the second half.
With Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge introduced off the bench, the Reds scored three unanswered goals after the break. First, Sturridge found the bottom corner of the net with his first touch before Sheyi Ojo converted another penalty and Shaqiri found the back of the net with an acrobatic overhead kick.

TALKING POINT - This was a display of strength from Liverpool’s fringe figures

With Mane and Salah going off at half time, it would have been understandable to expect Liverpool’s performance would drop in the second half. Instead, the likes of Shaqiri and Sturridge pushed on even further as Liverpool scored three unanswered goals. This was a show of strength from Klopp as he demonstrated his side’s new depth.

MAN OF THE MATCH - Xherdan Shaqiri (Liverpool)

He was only on the pitch for 45 minutes, but Shaqiri made this game his own with a very impressive debut performance for Liverpool. His overhead kick was the highlight of the match, but the Swiss also created a goal for Sturridge and was key in wrestling control of the contest away from Man Utd in the second half. On this basis, he will be a key figure for the Reds this season.
