France beat Germany in an international friendly, but the game quickly paled into insignificance after deadly attacks close to the stadium.
MATCH REPORT
France started the game the brighter, but it was Germany who created the best chances in the first half.
Thomas Muller should have scored but lost his footing at the crucial moment and Mario Gomez, teed up sublimely by Muller, blazed his shot over the bar when he should have scored.
France made Germany pay for those misses when Anthony Martial waltzed past Rudiger and Ginter before cutting back to Giroud, who stroked into the empty net in first half injury time.
Andre-Pierre Gignac came off the bench and capped a fine French performance with their second goal, meeting Blaise Matuidi’s excellent cross with a towering header.
The game was soured by explosions outside the stadium during the first half, which forced fans to remain inside the stadium after the final whistle.
KEY MOMENTS
33’ MULLER CHANCE! Oh that was a big chance for Germany's most lethal forward. A cushioned header from Ginter put Muller clean through, but he hesitated for a split second before shooting, and then slipped as he hammered the ball over from a few yards out.
43’ CLOSE! Gomez fires just over the bar when he should score! Muller, back to goal sees passes everyone else doesn't and slips in the Besiktas forward with a beautiful reverse pass, and Gomez should do better.
45’ GOAL! France 1-0 Germany: Giroud scores for France! A long ball finds Martial on the left, Rudiger dives in and misses the ball altogether, Martial then skips away from Ginter and cuts back to Giroud to stroke into the empty net from close-range.
60CLOSE! Giroud flashes a diving header wide. He took up a great position there but the ball bounced off the wrong side of his head!
64CLOSE! What an effort by Pogba! The Juventus forward lets fly from 25 yards and his rising drive whistles just over the bar.
77’ OFF THE POST! Muller hits an amazing shot against the post! With two players around him, he shifts the ball onto his left foot on the edge of the box and unleashes a brilliant shot that crashes back off the inside of the post.
86GOAL! France 2-0 Germany: Gignac makes it 2-0 with a bullet header! Matuidi puts in a superb cross from the left and Gignac meets his perfectly, and sends a towering header past Neuer.
TALKING POINT
Tonight wasn’t really about football, given the tragic events close to the stadium. Explosions could be heard throughout the first half and fans were held back at full time. France may have won this game, but tonight will not be remembered for football.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Anthony Martial (France): Another energetic and influential display by this exciting youngster. Took Antonio Rudiger and Matthias Ginter to the cleaners with some silky skill for the first goal and was a threat throughout.
