Luciano Narsingh struck a controversial winning goal as England were sent crashing back to earth by a 2-1 home defeat to the Netherlands.
Jamie Vardy marked his first Wembley start for England with a goal as he gave his Euro 2016 hopes a real boost despite a 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands.
The Leicester City hitman took his tally for club and country to 21 for the campaign when he finished off a flowing move to give the hosts the lead on 41 minutes.
However, second half strikes from Vincent Janssen (penalty) and substitute Luciano Narsingh meant the euphoria of Saturday's 3-2 win in Germany was quickly dampened against a Dutch outfit missing 10 men through injury.
In truth, it was always going to be difficult for England to recapture the style and verve on show in their success over the world champions as Hodgson made eight changes to his line up. Vardy started and followed up his goal in Berlin with another ruthless finish to surely secure his place on the plane to France while his Leicester team-mate, Danny Drinkwater could yet gatecrash it after a solid and efficient debut in midfield.
Question marks will remain over some of the other players with John Stones showing both sides to his game as his brilliance on the ball was marred slightly by his defensive deficiencies, while Daniel Sturridge was quiet on his first match back in England colours after an 18-month absence.
Hodgson will name his 23-man squad on May 12 and after this double-header of matches he will have much to mull over as he begins his final preparations for this summer's major tournament.

TALKING POINT. England have options in attack, but the defence remains a big concern.

Who will be in and who will miss out on the squad for Euro 2016 will be debated in the weeks ahead and while some players will have done their chances no harm at all, Hodgson's biggest problem is how to tighten up that creaking defence. Stones is a real talent but his errors at the back and insistence on playing the ball away has seen him caught out time and time again this season for Everton and he was uncomfortable at Wembley tonight. Chris Smalling has developed into an accomplished centre back but the full backs remain suspect defensively.
The options further forward are much more promising and it will be interesting to see how Hodgson looks to balance and fine-tune the two areas with just three friendly matches to play before it all gets underway in France.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Jamie Vardy (England). Was one of England's liveliest players and deservedly capped it with another strike. His pace and energy make him a real thorn in the side of defenders and he could be a serious weapon in France this summer after proving he can cut it against top international defences in the past few days.
