Think Hoffenheim took the lead rather fast against Bayern Munich on Saturday? Check out some of these super-speedy openers at the highest levels.
Kevin Volland’s goal for Hoffenheim inside nine seconds not only sent shockwaves through to the startled Bayern Munich defence but the footballing world.
Especially Borussia Dortmund midfielder Karim Bellarabi, who now has to make do with sharing his record for scoring the quickest ever goal in the Bundesliga.
Here are seven more memorable strikes inside 10 whirlwind seconds.
Seydou Keita – 7.6 seconds (Valencia, v Almeria, 27 March 2014)
From kick-off Almeria shifted the ball back through the spine of the side, before Keita intercepted a powder-puff pass by Marco Torsiglieri to goalkeeper Esteban, before slotting home his only goal for Los Che.
Tim Cahill – 8 seconds (New York Red Bulls, v Houston Dynamo, 20 October 2013)
The fastest goal in MLS history. Cahill leaps up to chest the ball down, allowing the ball to drop just the once before smashing home a 25-yard screamer. Cue the Aussie’s trademark fisticuffs boxing celebration.
Lukas Podolski – 9 seconds (Germany, v Ecuador, 29 May 2013)
Some cagey and evasive Ecuadorian defending allowed Podolski to rob the ball from defender Gabriel Achilier, before drilling low and hard past the hapless keeper. Good job it was only a friendly eh?
Karim Bellarabi – 9 seconds (Bayer Leverkusen, v Borussia Dortmund, 23 August 2014)
The German winger had the audacity to nutmeg Matthias Ginter before sliding the ball underneath Dortmund keeper Mitchell Langerak. It was the fastest goal in the Bundesliga, until Kevin Volland’s recent strike. Before that, Brazilian striker Giovane Elber, formerly of Bayern Munich, held the record for 16 wholesome years.
Joseba Llorente – 7 seconds (Real Valladolid, v Espanyol, 20 January 2008)
Llorente hooked the ball over Espanyol goalkeeper Inaki Lafuente after controlling a lofted through ball with consummate ease. Llorente made it 2-0 just over 33 minutes later – easy peasy - but that goal was slightly more mundane.
Julian Koch - 5 seconds (FC St. Pauli v FC Winterthur, 21 January 2015)
It is not always easy making your mark as a loanee at a new club with new surroundings. Just ask Arsenal fans about Kim Kallstrom or West Ham about Marco Borriello. But Koch, on loan from Mainz, showed few nerves as he thundered home, over the unsuspecting keeper.
Ledley King – 9.9 seconds (Tottenham, v Bradford City, 9 December 2000)
Not famed for his goalscoring record (just 10 in his whole career), Spurs hero King is spotted lurking unusually far inside the opponent’s half at Valley Parade. Picked out by a long ball downfield, King sent a bouncing shot past Bradford goalkeeper Matt Clarke. It remains the fastest goal in Premier League history.
