The Sevilla faithful were out of their seats in celebration just before half-time, only to see Alexander Kerzhakov's volley ruled out for an offside flag against Jesus Navas, though the pint-sized winger made up for his error on 53 minutes, providing a fine cross from the right for Antonio Puerto to open the scoring after Torrejon had failed to clear sufficiently.
Chevanton doubled the lead just three minutes later, outfoxing three Espanyol defenders on his own, before finishing calmly past Carlos Kameni.
Despite their dominance, the Andalusians allowed Espanyol back into the game just after the hour mark. Ferran Corominas latched onto a neat through ball from Ito, and made no mistake when one-on-one against Andres Palop.
Sevilla remained the better team until the end though, and put the game to bed on 77 minutes through Marti, who turned sharply and fired home from the edge of the area.
Real Zaragoza twice came from behind to snatch a point in dramatic fashion away at Osasuna.
Juanlu put the hosts ahead with a fine volley at the far post from Valdo's cross on seven minutes, though Pablo Aimar was on target with a fine free-kick soon after.
Valdo restored the Navarrans' lead ten minutes after the break, unleashing a stunning left foot shot that whistled past Cesar and in at the far post, only for Sergio Garcia to head home Aimar's cross in injury time.
Zaragoza now miss the chance to leapfrog Valencia, while Osasuna cannot quite regard themselves as safe from relegation yet.
At the other end of the table, Celta Vigo capitulated 3-0 at home to Real Mallorca, and remain in the relegation zone.
Venezuelan striker Juan Arango struck for the islanders on 9 minutes, firing home from Victor's pass, before Fernando Varela doubled their lead midway through the first half. Maxi Lopez completed Celta's nightmare late on, capping off a fine counter-attack.
A brace from Diego Forlan kept alive Villarreal's faint hopes of a European spot as they eased past Nastic 3-0. Matias Fernandez wrapped things up on the stroke of full-time.
Elsewhere, a second-half header from Alexis gave Getafe a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad, while Racing Santander's hopes of a UEFA Cup spot took a blow as they drew 0-0 at home to Deportivo La Coruna.
