Cristiano Ronaldo hit a hat-trick as Real Madrid stunned Atletico Madrid with a 3-0 win in the last derby at the Vicente Calderon.
Zinedine Zidane picked a makeshift team with injuries to Sergio Ramos, Pepe and Toni Kroos, opting for a central unit of Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic in an unfamiliar 4-4-2 formation.
The tactical switch worked with Real Madrid turning in their best performance of the season so far to move four points clear at the top of the Liga table following Barcelona’s goalless draw against Malaga earlier in the day.
The result also moves Real Madrid nine points clear of Atletico Madrid in the standings, with Zidane’s side currently on an unbeaten run of 24 games. Ronaldo and his team-mates laid down a marker with such a comprehensive victory at the home of their fiercest rivals.

TALKING POINT

Are Atletico Madrid out of the title race? This result leaves Simeone’s side nine points adrift of Real Madrid in the Liga table with Atletico Madrid looking weak at the back; something you usually can’t say of them. So can they really claw back that difference or have Atleti effectively been eliminated from title contention? It will take an almighty effort for them to get back into the race now.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Isco (Real Madrid): Ronaldo grabbed the headlines by netting a hat-trick but Isco was the man who orchestrated Real Madrid’s win in the last derby at the Vicente Calderon. Everything the away side did well came though the playmaker. Atletico Madrid never found a way to get a grip of Isco and they were made to pay a hefty price. Transfer listed at the Santiago Bernabeu not so long ago, he has enjoyed a renaissance over the past few weeks and months.
