Marseille coach Didier Deschamps insists that defender Taye Taiwo will not leave Stade Velodrome this summer - despite losing his place to Gabriel Heinze last season.
Responding to quotes attributed to the Nigeria left-back - in which he reportedly expressed interest in joining Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid - Deschamps pointed out that the player still has a year left on his current deal.
"He will be here until the end of the season," Deschamps told La Provence newspaper. "He is under contract for another year and we are interested in prolonging it so that he is not free in 2011.
"I need him in football terms, because a replacement would be too expensive for me.
"I am counting on him."
Taiwo was part of Nigeria’s unsuccessful World Cup squad and has already been the subject of a £4.2 million bid from Atletico, which was rejected.
