Since 2007 the former Reading anchorman, an Ivory Coast international, has suffered recurring blood clots that move around his legs and have led to extended spells out of the game.
These lead to chronic calf injuries and, given the nature of the problem and the potential for serious health problems, he has now been told to retire.
"After the 1-1 draw with Caen on October 1, he had a calf injury that we thought would rule him out for four or five days," Nice coach Eric Roy said.
"But after a few days he realised there was another problem in his thigh, and after tests in Paris it became apparent he was having these blood clots again.
"It’s a shock for him, but he’s a strong boy and we will help him."
