Jose Mourinho a 'serious candidate' for Paris Saint-Germain job, could 'stand up to the stars' - Inside Europe

Updated 12/05/2023 at 12:45 GMT

Speculation continues to surround the future of current Paris Saint-Germain boss Christophe Galtier, and with Jose Mourinho once again overseeing European success at Roma, every win is perhaps pushing him closer to the top of the Qatari owners' shortlist. Eurosport France think the relationship between Mourinho and PSG sporting director Luis Campos could be key.

'Control your emotions' - Mourinho what he told players before Leverkusen win

Jose Mourinho is edging closer on a return to the managerial elite.
A UEFA Conference League title with Roma last season, followed by quite possibly the Europa League trophy this time out - with his side leading ahead of their second-leg semi-final with Bayer Leverkusen - has seen the ex-Manchester United and Chelsea boss undergo something of a second coming.
There is, of course, one particular club who crave a European title more than any other - Paris Saint-Germain.
It might be the Champions League they are after, but Mourinho has won that twice too - in 2004 with Porto and then in 2010 with Inter Milan.
So could the 60-year-old be worth a punt by PSG's Qatari owners if they decide to dispense with the services of Christophe Galtier at the end of the season?
Mourinho might have dampened those rumours ahead of his team's first leg with Bayer - "If they [PSG] called, they didn't find me," he said - but that didn't constitute an outright denial.
As such, we caught up with Eurosport France's Julien Pereira to get the latest view from Paris...
How likely is it that Mourinho will take over at PSG next season?
He is one of the most serious candidates. But Doha's dream remains Zinedine Zidane.
Do his relationships with Luis Campos and Jorge Mendes help his chances of taking over?
Yes. They know each other and have worked together at Real Madrid. Campos knows Mourinho is one of the few coaches who can stand up to the stars.
He also knows that bringing in a big name – and a coach who has interested PSG in the past – would help to save his skin.
With the club wanting to create a team of younger players, is Mourinho suitable to this task?
I don't think we should confuse everything. Obviously, Mourinho is not the best to rebuild around a young team. But that's not PSG's project either.
In Paris, it’s simply necessary that young players who have talent (such as Warren Zaire-Emery) have the place they deserve in the club. That's not a problem for Mourinho.

This year, Galtier never spoke of Zaire-Emery as Mourinho spoke of Edoardo Bove after Roma's Leverkusen win, for example.
Do you think his combustible nature is suited to the club overall, given how Thomas Tuchel's tenure panned out?
Of course… not! But Mourinho has a dimension that Tuchel did not yet have when he was at PSG. It changes a lot of things in the balance of power between coach, Campos and the president.
Could he finally deliver the Champions League?
One thing is certain: he knows how to win titles and he has done so everywhere, except at Tottenham - but even Carlo Ancelotti or Pep Guardiola probably wouldn't win anything there.
Paris Saint-Germain have already tested many coaching profiles. But not his. At the point where PSG are, there isn't much else to hope for something 'new' anyway.
