Ashley Cole joins LA Galaxy

LA Galaxy have confirmed the signing of former England left-back Ashley Cole.
The deal had been mooted for a few weeks, with Cole expediting the transfer by terminating his contract at Roma by mutual consent earlier in January.
“Ashley is one of the world’s most successful defenders and has played at the highest level of competition throughout his career,” LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena told the MLS club’s official website.
“He can provide our defence with valuable experience. We look forward to his contribution to our club this season.”
Cole, who drifted down the pecking order at Roma, will now link up with Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane in California.
However, he will not occupy a ‘designated player’ slot – a place reserved for players who would normally fall outside a team’s salary cap.
OUR VIEW
It makes sense. Cole needed a move urgently and the States is the perfect escape route. It seems like the ideal venue to wind down a fine career, playing in a half-decent side away from the scrutiny that European football attracts.
