Tottenham Hotspur suffered a serious Champions League hangover as they fell victim to a shock 1-0 home defeat against Wigan Athletic.

In the corresponding fixture last season Spurs enjoyed a 9-1 romp but they barely created a chance against Roberto Martinez's side who were full value for their 1-0 victory.
Hugo Rodallega scored the only goal of the game 10 minutes from time with a fine low effort but Spurs stand-in goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini will be disappointed he allowed the ball go under his body.
It arrests a horrendous start to the season for Wigan who had endured 4-0 and 6-0 home defeats to Blackpool and Chelsea respectively on the opening two weekends.
Tottenham lacked spark throughout the first-half as a well-organised and hungry Wigan side turned up clearly determined to silence their doubters.
They very nearly silenced the home fans in the eighth minute too as Steve Gohouri cannoned a close range volley off the underside of the bar after Antolin Alcaraz headed across a deep Rodallega corner.
Spurs main attacking outlet seemed to be Gareth Bale down the left and he got a countless number of crosses in from both corners and open play – but Wigan are a big side and were able to deal with all the high balls into the box.
A low cross in the 23rd minute did however lead to Spurs best first half moment as Benoit Assou-Ekotto found Jermain Defoe near the penalty area, the England striker then controlled and spun in one movement before firing a fine low shot that Ali Al-Habsi had to get down to quickly to bat away in what was a superb save.
Defoe created a half-chance for himself in the 40th minute too as he poked a shot just the wrong side of the post despite being pushed wide by Emerson Boyce but that was about it when it came to Spurs chances in the opening half.
The first-half may have been bad from Spurs but it got even worse in the second-half as they produced a festival of nothingness despite bringing on Niko Kranjcar and Roman Pavlyuchenko for Peter Crouch and Assou-Ekotto at the break.
There were no chances at either end until just before the Wigan goal, when the visitors produced two clear openings which should have – but didn't – serve as a warning sign for Harry Redknapp's side.
First Alcaraz produced a miss-of-the-season contender as he fired over from three-yards out after a perfect low cross from Rodallega
The Colombian then put in another great delivery moments later but substitute Jordi Gomez could only fire over after a great run into the box.
All this came in a two minute spell before Rodallega showed his team-mates how it is done as he took down a cross that dropped over his shoulder before drilling a low shot into the corner. It was a decent effort that capped a fine performance from the striker but a keeper of Cudicini's quality really should not have let an effort like that spill under him.
Spurs finally created a few chances after the goal without quite ever bombarding the Wigan goal. Tom Huddlestone placed a volley just wide soon after the deadlock was broken and then Al-Habsi made two fine stops in quick succession to deny Kranjcar and Pavlyuchenko.
There was still time for Younes Kaboul to head wide of the target in stoppage time but Spurs ultimately got what they deserved after an awful performance – nothing.
