John Terry and Steven Gerrard net in Chelsea-Liverpool draw

Liverpool’s Champions League hopes are all but over despite earning a hard-fought point at Chelsea.

Steven Gerrard scored his first goal against the club that tried to sign him in almost 10 years to cancel out John Terry’s early header.

Gerrard had been subject to the usual derogatory chants and signs mocking his infamous slip last season, but was actually applauded off the pitch by the home fans when subbed off by Brendan Rodgers.

The celebratory atmosphere seemed to overawe Liverpool’s players, who allowed Chelsea to impose themselves on proceedings.

Terry headed the home side into an early lead from a Cesc Fabregas corner, and they had opportunities to double their advantage, carving Liverpool out numerous times down the right hand side.

They should have gone into the second half ahead, but lax marking from a Jordan Henderson free kick gave Gerrard a free header from six yards out to level maters.

Both sides came close to winning the game through Philippe Coutinho and Cesc Fabregas, but it finished honours even.

Liverpool are now six points behind fourth placed Manchester United, who have a +14 superior goal difference, with two games of the season remaining.

Liverpool need more pace - For the first 15 minutes of the second half, and at various points in the first half, Liverpool looked like they could carve open Chelsea’s defence. Pace and penetration is a gospel of Brendan Rodgers’, but with Rickie Lambert up front they just didn’t have quite enough of it. A fit Daniel Sturridge, or a quicker striker, and Liverpool could have turned a point into all three this afternoon.

Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool): In a game lacking stand-out performers, the Brazilian was the most dangerous on the pitch and came close to winning it in the second half.
