West Brom drub Wolves

Odemwingie scored against Wolves for a third successive match by netting the opener on 34 minutes, only for that strike to be cancelled out by Steven Fletcher against the run of play with virtually the last kick of the half.

Jonas Olsson scored what proved to be the winner midway through the second half with a goal which must go down as a mistake from Wayne Hennessey in what was a rare mistake in an otherwise excellent performance from the Wolves goalkeeper.

In the final quarter of an hour Odemwingie completed his first hat-trick for West Brom either side of a goal by debutant Keith Andrews to mark Roy Hodgson's first anniversary as manager in some style.

Wolves' fourth-straight home defeat in the league sees them drop into the relegation zone, below Blackburn Rovers on goal difference, and surely puts manager Mick McCarthy's five-year tenure at the club in serious jeopardy.

West Brom took an early lead in the reverse fixture at The Hawthorns back in October - which they won 2-0 - and they looked likely to do so again after just two minutes. Winger Jerome Thomas - who West Brom tried to put one-on-one with Wolves right-back Kevin Foley at every opportunity - was well placed as James Morrison's low cross ricocheted off a Wolves defender but Hennessey made a reaction save as close range.

Odemwingie was deployed in a deeper role than usual for West Brom as Marc-Antoine Fortune thrived in his role as lone front man, but he was able to exploit space in front of the defence to work several good chances. The Nigeria striker forced a two-handed save from Hennessey after being played into the box before instigating a move which led to Paul Scharner's strike being sensationally tipped over the bar by the Wayne Hennessey.

He eventually made the breakthrough with 10 minutes of the first half remaining after more great hold-up play from Fortune. The ball was worked wide to Odemwingie who came inside and saw his strike from the edge of the box deflect off David Edwards and through Hennessey's legs.

The Baggies looked good value for a half-time lead, but in the one minute of stoppage time Fletcher equalised. The Scotsman linked up well with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Doyle - who was a peripheral figure for much of the half in an unfamiliar wide role - before firing a strike on the turn past Ben Foster in the West Brom to match his tally of 10 goals from last season.

No team has recovered more points from losing positions than Wolves this season, just as West Brom have relinquished more leads than any other side, so it was perhaps no surprise to see Wolves emerge after the break with renewed vigour.

However, Fletcher's shot deflecting wide apart, the home side lacked much of the spirit and drive which has helped prolong this current spell in the top flight.

Midway through the half Wolves' collective panic at clearing a corner led to Johnson's hurried clearance falling for Olsson to hit shot right at Hennessey, only for the keeper to let it squirm through his arms and over the line.

After a madcap minute which saw Foster make a sprawling save from a Fletcher header, Youssouf Mulumbu block an effort on the line from the ensuing corner and Odemwingie have a shot saved on the break, West Brom came to the fore as Wolves went into meltdown.

On 78 minutes they crafted an aesthetically pleasing goal after Liam Ridgewell headed the ball back into the mixer at a corner. The ball fell for Olsson who flicked the ball up and backheeled it to Odemwingie in the six-yard box and the striker finished clinically from close range.

Former Wolves midfielder Andrews made his debut for West Brom as a half-time replacement for Paul Scharner, and he marked his Baggies bow with a goal. James Morrison wriggled his way around Johnson to the byline and pulled the back to the edge of the box. Ireland midfielder Andrews had all the space he needed to pick his spot and his finish.

With two minutes remaining of the 90 Odemwingie took his tally against Wolves to five goals in four games when he was well-placed to turn in Morrison's cross on the counter-attack and claim the match ball for the first time in English football.
