First win for new boss Hughes as Stoke beat Palace

Stoke turned around a first-half deficit to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium.

Goals from Charlie Adam and Ryan Shawcross gave the home side their first points of the season, after Marouane Chamakh’s strike had put the Londoners in front.

Shawcross had let a speculative high ball bounce on 31 minutes, allowing Chamakh to pounce on it, step round Robert Huth and coolly fire past Asmir Begovic for his first Premier League goal since September 2011.

The Potters turned things round with goals which both came as a result of defensive uncertainty in the Palace box.

Adam curled a left foot effort around Speroni from twelve yards, while Shawcross stabbed home after the Eagles defence failed to clear from a throw-in.

Palace perhaps deserved better on their first half showing but Mark Hughes will be the happier manager this evening.

PRE-MATCH: Charlie Adam starts for Stoke: the Scot made a good impression when coming off the bench against his old team Liverpool last weekend, and Hughes prefers him to Glenn Whelan.

18' – PENALTY NOT GIVEN: Etherington seems to clatter Ward in Stoke’s area – but referee Andre Marriner gives nothing.

31' - GOAL! Marouane Chamakh opens the scoring for the visitors after Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth fail to deal with a high ball pumped forward into their box. Good finish from the debutant.

58' - GOAL! Peter Crouch causes chaos among Palace’s defenders. The ball breaks to Jon Walters, who cues up Charlie Adam, and the Scotsman calmly curls the ball in from level with the penalty spot. Another good finish.

62' - GOAL! Shawcross caps an awful five minutes for the visitors, who fail in several attempts to clear the ball from their box after a throw-in. The Stoke skipper pokes the ball past Julian Speroni from six yards.

TALKING POINT: Ian Holloway’s substitutions – presumably the Palace boss wanted to shore things up after shipping two goals in quick succession, but taking off Chamakh and Campana, who had provided much of the Eagles’ creative spark, meant that chances became much harder to come by thereafter. In fairness to Holloway, Campana is said to be still short of match fitness.

Stoke came from behind to win a Premier League match for the first time since December 2012.

Marouane Chamakh scored his first Premier League goal since September 2011 – and the first when he has started a match since November 2010.

Charlie Adam (Stoke) - It’s harsh on several Palace players who could have had a shout to be nominated on their first half performances, but Adam returned to the Stoke starting XI to torment his old boss Ian Holloway with some influential midfield play and a coolly-taken finish for the equalising goal.
