Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was sent off but Everton could not cash in on the numerical advantage as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park.
The former Liverpool player appeared to have put his side in all sorts of trouble when he was red carded for collecting a second yellow after producing a silly, late challenge on James McCarthy on 72 minutes.
Shelvey had been booked in the first period for needlessly kicking the ball.
But despite their one-man advantage for the closing 18 minutes and four minutes of time added on, Everton did not do enough to claim the three points as the visitors held out fairly comfortably in a match marred by a number of silly bookings and fouls.
KEY MOMENTS
2' - EVERTON CHANCE! Eto'o turns to fire a volley at goal from close range for the home side, but Fabianski dives to his right to make a solid stop.
5' - SWANSEA CHANCE! Glorious chance for Bony as he raced through, but the ball is wide of the target. Should have been the opening goal for Swansea.
18' - SWANSEA DENIED CLEAR-CUT PENALTY! Shelvey sees a shot deflect off Alcaraz, and into the arms of Howard. Huge appeals for a penalty against Alcaraz, who appeared to handle, but referee said no.
63' - EVERTON CHANCE! Naismith breaks up the park at speed before McGeady sends a shot spinning a few yards wide of goal. So near yet so far.
72' - RED CARD! Shelvey is booked and sent off for hauling McCarthy to the deck. Can have few complaints about that.
74' - EVERTON CHANCE! Baines with a free-kick. Lukasz Fabianski with a punch, but doesn't get the ball safe. Jagielka then heads down and over the bar. Chance for Everton there.

TALKING POINT
Did Shelvey deserve to walk? Very much so. Can have few complaints about the decision. Needlessly kicked the ball away to produce the first booking, and was always under pressure from that point onwards. Fortunately enough, did not damage the visiting side's aspirations.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Ashley Williams (Swansea): A stout performance at the heart of the visiting defence by the Swansea captain. Was always in control of the Everton attackers to ensure his team collected a merited point.
