Paper Round: Manchester City target Luis Suarez, John Stones and Manuel Neuer
Updated 06/03/2016 at 11:10 GMT
Manchester City fans are salivating at the thought of Luis Suarez, John Stones and Manuel Neuer lining up under Pep Guardiola next season – plus the rest of the big stories from Sunday’s newspapers.
City to launch triple swoop for Suarez, Stones and Neuer
Manchester City are ready to splurge £150 million upon Pep Guardiola’s arrival at the Etihad – but will focus on just three elite players, according to the Mirror. Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, Everton’s John Stones and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer feature on the three-man shortlist, with City chief executive Ferran Soriano apparently outlining the club’s transfer expectations to a “select few in London”.
Paper Round’s view: Firstly, City simply don’t need Neuer – they have a sound goalkeeper already in Joe Hart. Secondly, while Stones would probably be available for the right price, are we actually sure he’s world-class material? And thirdly, it would take most of this £150m war chest to tempt Barcelona to part with Suarez, who wouldn’t be keen anyway. Conclusion: if these really are City’s transfer plans, they need a serious rethink…

Chelsea want Lukaku back
Chelsea are prepared to shell out £56 million to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge – double the figure Everton paid for the Belgian two years ago, report The Sun. The Blues are looking to bolster their attack after a miserable title defence, with owner Roman Abramovich apparently still keen on the 22-year-old.
Paper Round’s view: Why would Lukaku return to a club that passed him around the Premier League on loan – and then ruthlessly ejected him? He will undoubtedly attract sweeping interest in the summer, so he has little need to consider to a Chelsea return at this stage. They won’t be in the Champions League next season, so he would be wise to keep his career moving forward by spurning the Blues’ advances.

United poised to make Aubameyang swoop
Manchester United are ready to gazump Arsenal in the race for Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, according to the Daily Mail. The Gabon international, who has 22 Bundesliga goals this season, is supposedly keen on a move to Old Trafford, despite saying in February it was his dream to join Real Madrid.
Paper Round’s view: This one isn’t going away. United need an injection of pace and goals into their attack, and Aubameyang fits the brief. Does he really fancy another season in the Bundesliga, forever in the shadow of Bayern Munich? He revealed a desire to play for Real, but that move is far from guaranteed. A switch to United seems plausible – but only if they finish in the top four.

Newcastle will turn to Moyes
Newcastle United have finally lost patience with Steve McClaren and will turn to David Moyes, per the Telegraph. The Magpies lost 3-1 at home to relegation rivals Bournemouth on Saturday, leaving them in 19th in the Premier League with just nine games remaining.
Paper Round’s view: In this age of short-term management, it's commendable that Newcastle have persisted with McClaren. But would a new manager really be able to turn around their ill-fortunes with such little time remaining? They are still only one point from safety. McClaren can still keep them up.
