Jurgen Klopp's side recorded their second successive victory at Stamford Bridge, following last season's Philippe Coutinho-inspired 3-1 win, to move into fourth place in the Premier League table.
Much of the hype prior to the game was over David Luiz’s return to the Chelsea line-up in the absence of the injured John Terry, but the Brazil defender and the rest of the Chelsea backline were static spectators for Dejan Lovren’s 17th-minute opener.
The Croatia defender was one of three red shirts unmarked at the back post for Coutinho's angled cross, and his low first-time finish was arguably as good as anything Sadio Mane or Daniel Sturridge would have managed had they been ahead of Lovren in the queue.
But Lovren's goal paled into insignificance compared to Liverpool captain Henderson's strike on 36 minutes, an inch-perfect looping effort from 35 yards into the top corner of Thibaut Courtois' goal.
In-form Diego Costa pulled one back for Antonio Conte's side with a sharp finish from Nemanja Matic’s run and scooped cross just after the hour mark, but Liverpool doubled down to kill the game and hold on for the three points.

TALKING POINT: Are Liverpool potential Premier League champions?

An opening day win at Arsenal, a 4-1 home win over the current champions Leicester City last Saturday, and now a 2-1 win over the 2015 champions at Chelsea tonight. With a point from their visit to Tottenham on 27 August to boot, Jurgen Klopp's side are doing the business against the top teams.
Liverpool now lie fourth in the table with 10 points from five games, and with German goalkeeper Loris Karius and midfielder Emre Can on the comeback trail following injury, things are looking good for the red half of Merseyside. The one blot on the copybook is that 2-0 defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor last month.
Jurgen Klopp's side face winnable games against Hull City next week, and Swansea the following week. If they take six points from those two matches, Liverpool fans may start to dream of a first league title since 1990.

MAN OF THE MATCH - Joel Matip (Liverpool)

The Cameroon defender, picked up on a free transfer from Schalke in the summer, spoke before the match about how determined he was not to be intimidated by Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

But in the end, the 25-year-old didn't need to match the Brazil-born Spanish international for aggression – his superb positioning and anticipation of play proved enough. Costa did score for Chelsea just after the hour mark, and, energised by his fifth goal in five games, looked dangerous for the next ten minutes.
But Matip soon recovered to quell the Premier League top scorer's threat even with Chelsea chasing the game. Making only his third Premier League appearance for Liverpool, Matip already looks the real deal at this level.

KEY MOMENTS

17' – GOAL! Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool. Lovren sidefoots a lovely finish past Courtois from Coutinho's cross following a short free-kick. But there were three red shirts unmarked at the far post! That is Dejan Lovren's first Premier League goal for Liverpool, but Mane or Sturridge could easily have scored in his place, so poor was the Chelsea marking.
36' – GOAL! Chelsea 0-2 LIverpool. Henderson receives the ball 35 yards out from Cahill's clearance, and with no pass on, sweeps a shot into the top corner! Courtois was slightly off balance and not expecting the shot, but Henderson's effort was inch-perfect and under the bar.
61' – GOAL! Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool. Costa nets his fifth goal of the season, to convert Matic's clever scooped cross from the left touchline
64' – CHANCE! Oscar nods the ball across to Costa, who turns but shoots straight at Mignolet.
80' – SAVE! Courtois makes a great stop to deny Origi at the back post from Milner's cross, following a 30-pass move by Liverpool.
