United put on one of their best showings of the campaign in beating Bournemouth 3-1, and the Dutch manager took to the pitch to thank fans afterwards.
“Thank you for your unconditional support. Wherever we've played, you've never let us down," he said - words which prompted a vast chorus of booing, even in a stadium that was half-empty due to the match being rescheduled.
There were many who applauded as well, but the overall impression was not good.
Undaunted, Van Gaal soldiered on with his message, even ending on a high note.
"Now, we want to bring the FA Cup home to you. You deserve it. Thank you!”
Given the presence of many anti-LVG banners, the perceptive Dutchman's words were no doubt laced with a little irony.
Later, speaking to the media, Van Gaal admitted that he had fallen short of his goals but vowed to stay in post if he could.

Van Gaal: A club like Manchester United have to be in Champions League

"We didn’t reach our aim. We have to qualify for the Champions League," he said.
"We have still the FA Cup final to go. Everyone has to make up his mind at how we have done this season at that time.
"I can only say I have a contract of three years and I want to fulfill that. The transition period is not over yet. I am still the manager."
