Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has lavished praise on young forward Anthony Martial, who he has described as “incredible” after his stunning early impact.
The 19-year-old Frenchman has already scored four times for United since arriving as a surprise £36 million deadline-day signing and produced an inspired performance in the 3-0 win over Sunderland at the weekend.
Rooney found special praise for his new United team-mate and believes his introduction has been all the more remarkable given the circumstances of his arrival.
“He’s been incredible,” Rooney said in quotes published in the Daily Mirror.
“We have to remember he’s a 19-year-old lad who doesn’t speak English. But the start he’s had has been incredible.
“He’ll be a big player for us throughout the season and in the future, but we need to let him enjoy his football.
“I’m sure he’ll bring plenty of magic moments for us.”
Martial produced the assist for Rooney’s first Premier League goal of the season against Sunderland but the England striker says he was not concerned by his drought.
“I wasn’t worried,” said Rooney. “It’s my fifth goal of the season for United and I’ve scored for England, so it was just all about getting off the mark in the league.
“Hopefully everyone will concentrate on me playing my football now and I’ll enjoy it.”
