Antonio Conte's Chelsea lost their perfect Premier League record, but in the end were relieved to escape with a 2-2 draw away at Swansea.
The Blues went ahead in the first half through Diego Costa's strike in the 29th minute, and the fiery Spanish striker would have had two before the break had he not been guilty of indisputably the worst miss of the season so far.
Diego Costa miss - Chelsea v Swansea (screen grabs)
That miss came back to haunt the dominant visitors when Thibaut Courtois senselessly brought down Gylffi Sigurdsson just inside the box, the Belgian keeper having made a spectacularly ill-judged and ill-timed excursion off his line.
Gary Cahill then gifted Swansea a second as he got caught in possession, culpable for giving the ball away despite Leroy Fer fouling him as he took the ball in on Courtois.
It seemed that Chelsea would fall to defeat - as they did in this fixture last season - until Costa hit home with nine minutes left to rescue a draw.
Conte's men remain second but have lost ground at the top of the table to Manchester City, while the Swans climb into mid-table thanks to the point.

TALKING POINT

Is there a place for David Luiz after all? There were plenty of jokes flying around social media when Chelsea re-signed Luiz, and Antonio Conte didn't help matters when he said he was confident the Brazilian can become one of the best in the world, but that doesn't look so silly now after the collapse in the Chelsea defence.
Cruising at 1-0 Thibaut Courtois and Gary Cahill both had moments to forget as they allowed Swansea back in the game. Conte spoke ahead of the game about the role he hopes Kurt Zouma can play going forward, is a partnership with Luiz on the cards going forward?
With no notable saves today and a back-up of the calibre of Asmir Begovic waiting in the wings Courtois must be massively under pressure ahead of the Liverpool game.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Diego Costa (Chelsea): It could have been Leroy Fer or Lukasz Fabianski but Costa was at his bullying best against the Swansea defence and he gave them a torrid time. He is now up to four goals for the season - and it would have been fiver, were it not for his howler. Last year it took him until December to reach four goals; he was the driving force throughout the game.
Costa was the one who got Chelsea moving and he worked tirelessly upfront, of course taking his two goals fantastically well. He will continue to divide opinion but by and large today he was relatively controlled during this match, and channelling his emotions into playing football rather than picking fights. He was booked again for dissent though and he's now just two away from a suspension.

KEY MOMENTS

18' - GOAL! CHELSEA 1-0 (Diego Costa): Diego Costa scores his sixth goal against Swansea as the Welsh side fail to clear their lines on two occasions and Oscar is allowed space in the box to turn and find the Spaniard. Costa makes no mistake and fires it into the corner with a fine finish which Fabianski gets a hand to but can't keep out.
41' - DIEGO COSTA IS IN THE BOOK!: And you won't be surprised to know that it's for dissent. The Spaniard is not happy after a challenge from Fer in the box.
43' - HOW HAS THAT STAYED OUT?: Costa, whose every touch is being booed now, wins a corner and he is lurking at the back post to get on the end of a flick-on from John Terry. Incredibly he plays the ball back across goal rather than tap it home. Astonishing miss.
59' - PENALTY TO SWANSEA CITY!: Swansea break fantastically and Barrow finds Sigurdsson and Courtois comes rushing out but fouls the Swansea man. The Chelsea keeper is booked.

60' - GOAL 1-1 SWANSEA CITY GYLFI SIGURDSSON: The result of the penalty was never in doubt as Sigurdsson calmly slots home and becomes Swansea's record scorer in the Premier League, overtaking Wilfried Bony.
62' - GOAL SWANSEA City 2-1 LEROY FER: Well, well, well, that is a turn up for the books. A catastraphoic, nigh on hilarious, error from Gary Cahill and Fer nips in to put Swansea ahead. Who saw this coming!?
81' - GOAL 2-2 CHELSEA DIEGO COSTA: He's done it again! Ivanovic does fantastically down the right, linking with Moses and Kante before firing a shot away that was blocked. As the ball loops in the air Costa jumps and swivels and scores an impressive bicycle kick with the aid of a deflection.
