Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a penalty in the dying seconds to earn Manchester United a draw - their ninth at home this season - and they must surely now win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League. Everton, meanwhile, were excellent, threatening on the break and superb in defence; Ronald Koeman looks to be building a very decent team.
United were the better side in the early stages, but Ibrahimovic dithered when sent in on goal and no other clear chances were created. This gave Everton confidence, and after a few minutes of pressure, Phil Jagielka took advantage when neither David de Gea nor Marcos Rojo claimed a loose ball, putting Everton ahead with a poacher's dexterity.

The half-time introduction of Paul Pogba improved United, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan also made a difference when he was sent on. But Everton's back four were outstanding, so too Gareth Barry in front of them, defending their box with discipline, organisation and bravery. And, all the while, Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku threatened on the break - better decision-making from them, and this would not have been a close game.
As full-time drew near and things became increasingly frenetic, United still had a sniff, and were denied what looked a legitimate goal when Ibrahimovic was flagged offside after heading home. But then, in injury-time, Luke Shaw met a weak clearance just outside the box, and Williams palmed his shot clear when Joel Robles might well have saved it. Ibrahimovic duly curled home from the spot, so United stay 5th and Everton 7th.

TALKING POINT

What was Romelu Lukaku doing when Ashley Williams was sent-off? It's true that Williams panicked, but he had no idea where his goalkeeper was, and had also defended brilliantly all night. So it was odd to see Lukaku, who was a threat but wasteful, shouting and shushing him, before gesticulating furiously and whinging to Eric Bailly. There may well have been some stern words exchanged in the away dressing room at full-time.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Phil Jagielka (Everton): Run close by Barry - and Williams until injury-time - but has a goal to add to his leadership, blocks and focus.

PLAYER RATINGS

Manchester United: De Gea 4, Young 5, Bailly 7, Rojo 5, Blind 6, Carrick 6, Herrera 7, Fellaini 5, Lingafrd 5, Ibrahimovic 5, Rashford 5. Subs: Pogba 6, Mkhitaryan 7, Shaw 6.
Everton: Robles 7, Holgate 7, Jagielka 9, Williams 7, Baines 7, Barry 8, Davies 6, Gueye 7, Barkley 7, Lukaku 6, Mirallas 6. Subs: Pennington 6, Calvert-Lewin 6.

KEY MOMENTS

5’ - CHANCE: Here comes Zlatan, pouncing on Holgate to strut into the box. He's looking around for a pass, but in that time, Robles comes out, Williams slides in, and blocks his shot well.

22’ - GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 Everton (Jagielka) The corner is a regulation one, pulled back away from the near post, where Williams wins an uncontested header. The ball loops up, and underneath it are Jagielka and Rojo - De Gea should come and clean them out, but he doesn't, and while Rojo does equally little, the Everton captain, back to goal, extends a foot around him and flips a delicious finish into the net.

26’ - CLOSE: Barkley finds space in the centre-circle and sends a ball over the top for Lukaku, who cuts inside and drives a left-footer through Blind and Rojo that whizzes past the near post.

30’ - FREE-KICK ...and this is a great effort from Blind, coming from behind the ball to get the torque. But Robles flies across goal to claw it away - bravely, given he's definitely clattering the post, which he does - and Herrera is first on the scene, hammering the bar from an acute angle.

55’ - BAR: Pogba hits the bar! Again! Young's delivery from the free-kick is excellent, and the ball clips off Gueye before arriving at Pogba who does really well to hold his position and guide it goalwards. But his header is fractionally high.

71’ - OFFSIDE? Lingard lays back for Herrera who, on the right corner of the box, tosses a brilliant cross over to Zlatan at the back post. He doves around Jagielka to force a header through Robles, but the flag is up. He'd gone a split-second early, and that's a brilliant decision from the linesman. Er, no it isn't - his arm's off, he's on, and either way it's so close that the attacker should have been given the benefit of the doubt.

90+3' - PENALTY UNITED! RED CARD ASHLEY WILLIAMS! Zlatan knocks down a long ball, Jagielka stretches it out of the box, and of course, there's Luke Shaw, smacking a right-footer goalwards - Williams dives, palms it away, and there are no arguments from anyone. But really, was it necessary? The keeper might just have saved that - such is panic.
90+4' - GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Everton (Ibrahimovic) Zlatan poses, because that's what football's all about really, after Robles dives right and he scoops centre-left.

KEY STATS

  • Manchester United's nine league home draws is the most they've ever recorded in a full Premier League season.
  • Against the top six teams in the league, Romelu Lukaku has scored three times in nine games.
