Sam Allardyce is set for talks over the vacant England manager's job, while the hyperinflation of transfer fees continues apace. It's Tuesday's Paper Round.

Big Sam's time has arrived

Sam Allardyce has left Sunderland's training camp in Austria to fly back to England and meet with the FA over the vacant England manager's job - reports The Sun. English football's governing body are keen on appointing Allardyce, but Jurgen Klinsmann and Steve Bruce have also been linked with the post.
Paper Round's view: Big Sam really shouldn't be the man for England. But desperate times and all that...
If England want an English manager then Allardyce is the best choice (if Eddie Howe is ruled out on the grounds of age) although it will be fascinating to see what he does with the technically gifted emerging generation.
The obvious danger of appointing a manager like Big Sam is that he'll undo much of the good work that Hodgson achieved during his tenure, developing a style of play and a cohesive relationship between the age groups that seemed to be coming together nicely before Roy's Euro 2016 calamity.

The Euros were a disaster for England, but there is a system in place that needs to be built on... and it's highly questionable that Allardyce is the right man for that job.
But, in this post-Brexit era, maybe it would be fitting for England to give the world what they expect, embrace the stereotype and go full two pints of lager and a packet of crisps for a couple of years. What could possibly go wrong...?

Real Madrid told to pay £100m for Payet

West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan has valued midfielder Dimitri Payet at an astonishing £100m - reports The Express. The Hammers' star midfielder enjoyed a stellar Euro 2016 as France reached the final of their own tournament before a heart-breaking extra-time defeat to Portugal on Sunday. But France's loss hasn't put Real Madrid off Payet, with the Spanish club still keen on bringing the playmaker to the Bernabeu for the new season.
Paper Round's view: You can't blame Sullivan for trying, but his valuation of Payet is absolute nonsense. The French midfielder is a terrific player, but he's 30 next season and there's not a club in Europe who would even pay half that much for his services.
Real Madrid are always linked with in-form tournament talent, but it's worth considering where Payet would fit in. Is he a better option out wide in Real's 4-3-3 than Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale? Clearly not. And is he a more useful squad player than either Isco or James Rodriguez? Bearing in mind that both of those players are five years younger than Payet then the answer is, once again, no. Chuck in that it was Payet who ended Ronaldo's Euro 2016 final - as a player, anyway - with a tough tackle, and it's near-impossible to see this one coming off.
It's only right that West Ham ask for a premium price for their best player, but some of Sullivan and Gold's recent quotes are putting the Hammers in danger of becoming Europe's laughing stock.

United and Real in record transfer tussle

Manchester United are hopeful of beating Real Madrid to the signing of Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba - reports The Sun. The Old Trafford club have trumped Real with a world-record £100m bid for the France international, but Pogba reportedly prefers the prospect of playing under Les Bleus legend Zinedine Zidane in Madrid. Both clubs are still in the race to sign the talented midfielder, with an eye-watering transfer fee almost inevitable... although United hope that their relationship with Pogba's agent will prove the difference.

Paper Round's view: This story just won't go away. Pogba is a brilliant footballer and it seems highly likely that he will be plying his trade in either La Liga or the Premier League next season. He's not worth £100m, but if the transfer fee is ignored then he would no doubt become successful at either club given time.
United's links with Mino Raiola should give them the edge, while tactically there's also a more obvious place for Pogba in the United XI than in a Real Madrid central midfield already packed with world-class quality.
