The Spaniard has been in and out of the City team for the past few weeks, missing the vast majority of their matches.
He played his second game since mid-December on Tuesday evening as Cityran out 3-1 winners against Watford.
The midfielder has now posted an explanation for his absence on Twitter, saying his son Mateo was born prematurely:
"I want to thank all of you for the love and good wishes received in the last few weeks, special thanks to my team mates, the manager and all at the club for understanding my situation.
"Also I want to share with you the birth of my son Mateo, who was born extremely preterm and is fighting day by day with the help of the medical team."
Manager Pep Guardiola had previously told press that Silva was not under consideration for games until he chose to return, citing personal reasons.
He has also stressed that the club will be flexible with Silva to give him as much support as he needs.
