Liverpool collapsed after a red card for Sadio Mane in the first half as they lost 5-0 to Manchester City.
The Reds had started brightly but found themselves 1-0 down when Sergio Aguero opened the scoring and then a man down after Mane was given his marching orders having collided with Ederson trying to get on the end of a through ball.
After that it was one-way traffic and Gabriel Jesus nodded in just before the break to double the lead.
He added another when set up by Aguero, who unselfishly squared when through on goal, and substitute Leroy Sane netted twice more to complete the rout.
The win takes City top, for the time being at least, with 10 points from four games, while it was Liverpool’s first defeat of the season and only Klopp’s second in 23 Premier League games against sides that finished in the top seven the previous season.

TALKING POINT

Was it a red? Mane’s sending off has quickly divided opinion, as red cards so often do, but if you watch the replays it’s hard to argue with Jon Moss’ decision. Yes, Mane had his eyes on the ball, but his foot was high and ended up colliding with Ederson’s face. Intent is irrelevant and it was both dangerous and reckless, so the referee had no choice.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City): The Belgian was brilliant and it was two balls of supreme quality from him that opened up the Liverpool defence and gave City the opening two goals. The first especially, which came at a time when Liverpool were on top, was a perfect pass and with two top strikers ahead of him he could rack up a huge number of assists this season.

37’ – RED CARD! Mane sets off after a through ball, as does Ederson, and the goalie gets there just before Mane who had raised his foot to try and flick the ball beyond him and catches his opponent. Referee Moss is quick to show a red card.
45+6’ – GOAL! Manchester City 2-0 Liverpool (Jesus). De Bruyne fools Alexander-Arnold with a dumy to get some space, then sends in another great cross for Jesus who is onside this time and nods home.
