Fenway Sports Group had earlier released a statement on the Liverpool website saying that the club's stance was definitive.
However, in now appears that the 25-year-old has elected to test the club's resolve by officially requesting to leave the club.
The club's statement read :
We wish to offer clarity as regards our position on a possible transfer of Philippe Coutinho.
The club’s definitive stance is that no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool Football Club when the summer window closes.
Initially Liverpool-based journalist James Pearce was quick to refute the claim, taking to Twitter to insist that the club were adamant the player had not requested to leave.
However, it was later reported that Liverpool had, in fact, received and then rejected the Brazilian's request to leave the club.
Barcelona were said to be keen to sign the 25-year-old as a replacement for Neymar, who signed for Paris Saint-Germain last week for a record fee of €222 million.
Earlier on Friday it was announced that Coutinho would miss the season opener against Watford with a back injury.
