A fine, battling performance from Southampton gave them a late win to set the Ralph Hasenhuttl era away in earnest. His team leap out of the bottom three while Arsenal, whose 22-game unbeaten run is over, are now fifth.
Southampton started the game looking the more determined side, and took the lead on 19 minutes when Danny Ings, returning from injury, headed Matt Targett's cross pass Bernd Leno. But Arsenal responded quickly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan timing his run into the box perfectly; he thumped home another definitive header.
Arsenal improved thereafter, but just before half-time fell behind again when Ings cleverly looped Nathan Redmond's excellent cross over Leno; once again, they required half-time adjustment from Unai Emery. And they got it, switching formation then equalising again on 52 minutes, Mkhitaryan's scuffed shot taking two deflections on its way past Alex McCarthy.
For a short while Arsenal looked certain to score again, but Southampton rode out what proved to be a minor stormlet and as the game became stretched looked as likely to find a winner. Which they did with five minutes remaining, Leno making a miserable attempt to claim Shane Long's cross, which allowed Charlie Austin to head into an empty net.

TALKING POINT

Why can't Arsenal start properly? It's all very well praising Unai Emery's in-game adjustments, but he is also responsible for sending his players out to start in suitable manner, and between him and them, they are failing over and over again. This must be resolved quickly, because it is impossible to keep winning when only playing properly for 45 minutes.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Danny Ings (Southampton) Set the tone for his team, pressing from the front, scored two lovely headers, and generally worked over the Arsenal back three with his adroit hold-up play.

KEY STATS

Charlie Austin has scored in all five of his games against Arsenal - only Raheem Sterling, against Bournemouth, has a better 100 percent record against any opposition.
Arsenal haven't led at half-tome of any of their 17 league games this season.

KEY MOMENTS

6’ - But here we go! Guendouzi looks up and clips a very nice ball over the top for Aubameyang, who's pulled off the dosing Yoshida. He leaps to control, forcing himself wide and allowing McCarthy to set; the shot is beaten away easily enough.

19’ - GOAL! Southampton 1-0 Arsenal (Ings) Armstrong sends the ball out to Targett, who swings over a fine cross. In the middle, Ings is behind Koscielny, who leaps with extended leg, getting nowhere near the ball; Ings duly headbutts home the opener.

28’ - GOAL! Southampton 1-1 Arsenal (Mkhitaryan) Well! Arsenal keep the ball for a while but without doing much, then Iwobi comes deep, injects some pace and sticks Monreal in behind. He chugs in behind, cuts back, and Mkhitaryan times his arrival perfectly, heading firmly past McCarthy.

44’ - GOAL! Southampton 2-1 Arsenal (Ings) This is very nicely done, out of absolutely nothing. Valery finds Redmond inside him, who ambles towards the corner of the box before clipping a delicious cross for Ings, drifting between Koscielny and Lichsteiner; he allows it to hit his forehand, so that it loops over Leno and into the near side-netting. That's very nicely done.

46’ - And it pays off almost immediately! Iwobi injects some pace, weaving infield and finding Mkhitaryan, who flicks a lovely pass around the corner for Aubameyang. But McCarthy does well to stand up then block his low shot.

52’ - GOAL! Southampton 2-2 Arsenal (Mkhitaryan) Guendouzi does well to win possession when Romeu dithers outside his own box - Lacazette helps him too and finds Mkhitrayan, whose low drag is deflected past the wrongfooted McCarthy by Vestergaard.

75’ - Southampton win a corner which Targett swings out; Yoshida meets it beautifully, but Leno reacts brilliantly to repel his header. Romeu scrambles and Long pokes home, but was offside from initial header. Good flag from Sian Massey-Ellis.

85’ - GOAL! Southampton 3-2 Arsenal (Austin) Southampton have stuck to it here, and Hojbjerg does very well in midfield, battling through a pair of challenges before finding Long at inside-right. He might go at his man but instead opts to tease over a cross; Leno comes and misses, allowing Austin to nod home at the far post. It was an empty net, but he did well it keep his eye on the ball, through the flap.
