Mendy, 24, missed a large chunk of last season after rupturing the ACL in his right knee.
This new injury is to his left knee and is a small tear to the meniscus which he suffered towards the end of Sunday's 3-1 derby win over rivals Manchester United.
City confirmed in a statement on Wednesday evening Mendy withdrew from the France squad and flew to Barcelona where he had scans and underwent surgery at Dr Ramon Cugat's clinic.
The 24-year-old defender attended Dr. Cugat’s clinic in Barcelona where scans revealed that surgery was required," the City statement said.
"That surgery was conducted on Wednesday evening and everyone at Manchester City wishes Benjamin a speedy recovery."
City gave no time frame on his recovery but a report from The Telegraph said that Mendy could miss the remainder of 2018, a total of 11 matches.
Manager Pep Guardiola has other options available to him such as Aymeric Laporte, Danilo, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabian Delph.
