Solskjaer to start Old Trafford clearout

Manchester United boss has Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said he is ready to get rid of players this summer. While he has said he wants to keep Paul Pogba at the club, The Sun reports that in line to leave are Fred, Eric Bailly and Alexis Sanchez, who have all struggled at Old Trafford. Solskjaer said: “It’s going to be survival of the fittest or survival of the best. That’s how ruthless we have to be. We need players here who are going to be able to take us forward.”

Paper Round’s view: United do need to get rid of many of their players, and to start in midfield would let them put in consistent players alongside Pogba. If Pogba is then still incapable of playing three good games in a row, it should then mean United sell him on to a club where he is prepared to apply himself consistently, too.

United want Rice

The Daily Mail believes that United will follow up that purge with an introduction of younger talent to the club. They say that they are preparing a £50 million bid for West Ham midfielder, Declan Rice. The 20-year-old England international can also play in defence, and has been linked with Manchester City for most of the season. The other target is Borussia Dortmund’s 19-year-old winger Jadon Sancho.

Paper Round’s view: Sancho’s move to Manchester United has been rumoured for so long it would now be a surprise if the transfer does not take place, and it would allow substandard players like Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard to move on to other clubs. As for Rice, he is a superb player but it is still likely that he will join rivals Manchester City instead.

Bournemouth consider Fraser future

Bournemouth are weighing up their options for their winger Ryan Fraser. The 25-year-old Scotland international has impressed on the south coast, but his contract is up at the end of next season. He has been linked with a move to Arsenal, and his current club must now weigh up whether to sell him in the summer in order to realise some profit on the player, or let him go for nothing next year.

Paper Round’s view: If Fraser is going to play his last season for Bournemouth unsure of his future and unable to focus on his football, then the club should move him on now - there is no guarantee his form will be maintained, anyway. There are countless players abroad who are available for reduced prices, and Bournemouth’s scouting system appears to function well, so there is no point losing money on Fraser.

Everton could lose Gomes to Spurs

The Telegraph report interest from Arsenal and Everton in Ajax winger, David Neres. Manchester United and Chelsea are also interested in the 22-year-old Brazilian player, who could cost around £34 million. The paper then goes on to claim that Spurs are ready to hijack Andre Gomes’ permanent transfer to Everton, by offering £30 million to Barcelona in the hope the 25-year-old Portugal international will force a move to them.

Paper Round’s view: Neres has shown quality in Ajax’s Champions League campaign that might see them edge through to the semi-finals, at least. His pace is a vital quality, and Ajax do seem like they are close to a season when they will lose some of their best players. Gomes, meanwhile, has done well for Everton on occasion, and £30 million is a bargain price given some of the other fees these days.
