Martial set for United stay

After being linked with a move away to Real Madrid, Chelsea and Spurs all summer, and after speculation that Jose Mourinho wanted him sold, Anthony Martial is close to signing a new five-year deal with Manchester United. His relationship with the United manager was at breaking point after he was fined for attending the birth of his second child in the summer, but he now appears willing to stay in the belief that Mourinho will soon be on his way out.

Paper Round’s view: On the one hand, Martial has the talent to be one of the best forwards in the world. On the other hand, he has failed to live up to his promise in the last two seasons. If Ed Woodward believes he is worth keeping, then he evidently thinks differently than his manager, Mourinho. It appears to be an intractable situation until one of them leaves, and this makes it more likely the manager will be pushed.

PSG set to sign Stoke striker Choupo-Moting

In perhaps the least expected signing of the summer transfer window, it appears that Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting could sign for Paris Saint-Germain. The Cameroon striker only Stoke joined on a free transfer last summer and enjoyed an indifferent season as the club were relegated. However, Stoke are happy to be free of his £60,000 a week wages and PSG can use the 29-year-old as a replacement for the outgoing Goncalo Guedes, who has joined Valencia for £36m.

Paper Round’s view: Choupo-Moting did well at Schalke before his move to the Premier League, so PSG’s scouts will be hoping that he rediscovers his best form in a more talented side. If he does, it’s a bargain, otherwise the squad can cover for him. More importantl for them is to make a profit on a couple of deals in order to improve the chances of passing Financial Fair Play regulations.

Toure set for Olympiakos switch

Yaya Toure is going back to one of his former clubs, Olympiakos. Toure joined the Greek side in 2005 before leaving for Monaco after the 2006 World Cup. His most recent club, Manchester City, released him on a free transfer in the summer and he had been expected to stay in the Premier League. Having failed to find a suitable deal, he will now move back to Greece, and the 35-year-old midfielder is expected to command a salary of £2m after tax.

Paper Round’s view: For £2m a year, it seems Premier League clubs would prefer to sign younger players rather than Toure, who appeared to cope with the demands of the league pretty well considering his age. However, with no move forthcoming he has sealed a deal which should give him at least one more hefty pay deal, and the chance of more silverware.

Rose likely to stay at Spurs

After a transfer window in which Spurs have done close to nothing, and brought in no senior players, it seems that they will also keep hold of Danny Rose. Rose had been expected to join one of Manchester United, PSG or Schalke at various points recently, but no move has been made and the 28-year-old England international now expects to remain with the London club.

Paper Round’s view: Having signed nobody of note, Spurs could ill afford to lose one of their first teamers. Rose might struggle to regularly displace Ben Davies, who has made the place his own since Rose’s injury last season. Rose has had a difficult year, and if he is able to rediscover his form then he could have the best years of his career ahead of him still.
