Barnes tries to beat Darlow at his near post with a shot from the edge of the box but it's never troubling the Newcastle goalkeeper.
Shelvey stays onside to deliver a cross that is just begging to be finished - but no Newcastle player anticipates it and Leicester survive, as we enter the first of four additional minutes.
Chance! Barnes has the chance to seal the game for Leicester as he darts into the box from the left, but he can only shoot straight at Darlow!
Wilson squanders a gilt-edged opportunity to equalise for Newcastle, but he was in an offside position and it wouldn't have counted. The hosts are knocking on the door though.
Leicester deal with the corner delivery and they have five minutes, plus injury-time, to hold on.
Carroll has a taste for goals now. He drives through the middle before unloading a shot which takes a deflection off Evans and goes out for a corner.
- GoalAndy CarrollNewcastle United
GOAL! Newcastle 1-2 Leicester (Andy Carroll): Carroll scores his first goal for the club in 10 years as Newcastle pull one back! Game on! Leicester can only partially clear from Ritchie's free-kick, it drops to Carroll who finishes superbly on the half-volley!
Leicester sub: Soyuncu comes on fro Maddison, as the Foxes go to three at the back.
Newcastle sub: Andy Carroll comes on for Yedlin.
Off the woodwork! Vardy volleys a lovely effort against the crossbar after latching onto James' through ball. It wouldn't have counted in any case as the Leicester forward was in an offside position.
Game over, one would think.
- GoalYouri TielemansLeicester City
GOAL! Newcastle 0-2 Leicester (Youri Tielemans): Ohhh, what a goal! Albrighton picks out Tielemans in a central area and from 25 yards out he curls a beautifully controlled first-time shot into the corner of Darlow's goal.
Newcastle are asking all of the questions now, as Murphy sprints through the middle and feeds Wilson, who finds Longstaff on the overlap. However, his cross can't pick out a team mate.
Murphy is trying to pick out Wilson at the back post but overhits it cross - and it nearly ends up in the back of the net! Schmeichel is caught cold but the ball drops just over his bar.
Double Newcastle sub: Murphy replaces Almiron, while Shelvey comes on for Joelinton.
Barnes tees up Maddison who shoots well wide, as Leicester search for a killer second.
- Yellow cardYouri TielemansLeicester City
Yellow card! Tielemans goes into the book for a cynical foul on Almiron.
Albrighton dances his way into the Newcastle penalty area and wins a corner, which the hosts deal with.
No penalty! Newcastle almost respond immediately as Wilson bursts into the penalty area, but Castagne makes an inch-perfect challenge to win the ball cleanly. Newcastle want a spot-kick but the referee isn't interested and has this decision spot on.
- GoalJames MaddisonLeicester City
GOAL! Newcastle 0-1 Leicester (James Maddison): Newcastle had started the second half strongly but now find themselves behind! Leicester break up the field with lightning speed, Barnes leading the attack as he gallops forward before switching it to Vardy on the left hand side of the penalty area. He cuts it back to Maddison, who smashes it past Darlow with a venomous shot!
Schar steps out of defence and finds Ritchie with a cross-field pass. His cross is brilliantly defended by Evans at the near post, though.
The ball drops kindly to Almiron as Ndidi heads Ritchie's corner delivery clear, but the Newcastle playmaker can't get over it and sends his first-time shot into row-Z.
Yedlin is afforded too much space on the right flank and he almost makes Leicester pay as he whips an inviting ball across the face of goal. No one is attacking it in Newcastle colours though, evading everyone.
Wide! Better from Leicester as Castagne floats a ball over the top for Vardy to run onto. But from a tight angle he can only volley at the side-netting. Wasted opportunity.
Maddison slides a nice ball into the feet of Albrighton on the right side of the penalty area. He tries to pick out Vardy in the centre but the pass isn't on and Newcastle clear with ease.
- 2nd Half
Kick-off! Leicester get things moving in the second half.
HT: It's Newcastle's turn to attack a set-piece. Ritchie pumps it into the penalty area, Clark glances his header well wide. And that will be that for the first half.
Leicester win a corner which is whipped in by Maddison. It's a lovely delivery and finds Fofana but he can't keep his header down.
Play resumes, Schar is fine.
There's going to be four minutes of added-time to play at the end of a first half that has been interrupted on numerous occasions. And now Schar goes down!
Oh dear, a wild shot from Tielemans which ends up high into the stands just about sums up a drab first half.
Again it's decent build-up play from Leicester as the ball is worked to Albrighton on the right flank. But his cross can't beat the first man Ritchie as Newcastle concede the corner.
A game of stop-starts, Almiron is now down receiving treatment for a facial injury after being caught by Ndidi's arm.
Better from Leicester now as they move the ball quickly in and around the Newcastle penalty area. Barnes switches it to Castagne out wide, but his cross has too much pace on it, hitting Barnes' shoulder and goes out for a goal-kick.
Joelinton commits a foul on Justin and is fortunate not to go into the book for throwing the ball away.
There has been a lack of urgency from either side, but that's better from Tielemans who plays a first-time through ball searching for Vardy. But the Leicester forward can't get the ball under his control and it runs through to Darlow.
The referee Rob Jones has touched the ball not once, twice but three times in this first half.
It hasn't been a classic.
Fofana blocks Wilson's cross, with the Newcastle forward appealing for a free-kick for handball on the left flank. Replays show it struck his chest, though.
Leicester have had 60 per cent of possession but haven't much to show for it, registering just one shot without hitting the target.
Almiron is back to fulfil his defensive duties and makes a successful challenge on Barnes down the left flank, before winning the free-kick to give Newcastle some respite.
Maddison is back on his feet and bursts into a light jog which suggests he's going to be fine to continue.
Maddison falls awkwardly after being challenged by Schar, prompting concern from the Leicester bench as the medics make their way onto the pitch to treat him.
Newcastle's game plan is clear: to sit back, frustrate Leicester and hit them on the counter-attack with long balls when the opportunity arises.
Clark pinches the ball off Albrighton and feeds Longstaff. Wilson is on the move as the Newcastle midfielder tries to set his team mate away on the break with a long ball, but Schmeichel - again - reads the situation well and mops up.
Newcastle have a free-kick on the right as Yedlin draws the foul from Fofana. Ritchie sends it into the mixer but Leicester scramble it clear.
Newcastle break from a Leicester corner, with Joelinton searching for Wilson with a ball over the top. Schmeichel comes a long, long way off his line and makes the interception. That's the definition of a sweeper-keeper.
Fofana heads clear Yedlin's cross but he gets a second bite of the cherry and this time he finds Joelinton who heads straight at Schmeichel.
The hosts are enjoying a long spell of possession here. But as you'd expect from Newcastle this season, they aren't moving the ball at any speed.
Newcastle are playing with the offside trap - but against a Leicester side that boasts Jamie Vardy that is a risky tactic. So far it has worked, though.
Goal ruled out! Vardy thinks he's got his 12th goal of the season as he rounds the goalkeeper and slots it home from a tight angle after latching onto Maddison's through ball. But the linesman's flag is raised and it's not going to count.
Close! Tielemans unlocks the Newcastle defence with a lovely pass through the middle for Vardy. He opts not to shoot, though, instead cutting it back to Tielemans. He tries to slide it to Barnes but gets too much on his pass, and the chance is gone! Leicester guilty of trying to walk the ball into the net.
Leicester have taken 19 points on their travels this season, a league high. But they have some defending to do here as Ritchie stands up a deep cross. Castagne rises higher than Yedlin to clear.
Joelinton goes to ground and has to receive attention from the medics after a collision with Tielemans. But the Newcastle forward is going to be fine to continue.
More defending for Newcastle to do, as Clark heads clear Castagne's cross. Schar is then on hand to deal with Vardy's delivery.
Shot! The first sight of goal for Maddison, who loves to run between the lines. He gets in between the Longstaff brothers and flashes a shot wide from 25 yards.
Schmeichel is making his 500th career appearance in English league football today.
- 1st Half
Kick-off! The players take the knee before Newcastle get us underway at St James' Park!
FIVE minutes until kick-off! It's Newcastle versus Leicester in the Premier League, it's LIVE and it's NEXT!
TEN minutes until kick-off at St James' Park! Newcastle United won their last Premier League game played on Sunday, beating Everton 2-1 in November - the Magpies haven't won consecutive Sunday games in the competition since a run of three in May 2018 (winning vs Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea).
Leicester have won six of their last eight games on the road this season, losing just once. Newcastle, meanwhile, haven't scored in their last four.
Leicester haven't lost their first league game in any of the last 12 calendar years (W8 D4), since losing 1-3 at QPR in 2008. The Foxes have kept a clean sheet in each of their last five such games, winning the last three in a row. More good omens for Rodgers' men.
Pre-match stat: Newcastle have lost seven of their last nine Premier League meetings with Leicester (W2), losing both against the Foxes in 2019-20 by an aggregate score of 0-8.
Leicester are just four points adrift of leaders Liverpool, but Rodgers insists his side are not focused on the title race. "For me I am always honest and our thinking is if we can have European football again next season at this stage of the team's development, that would be great success for us," the Leicester boss said. "With all due respect... Manchester City and Liverpool, these are fantastic teams full of experienced players who have been building for a number of years, so we are not at that level."
Leicester's away form this season has been excellent, and Steve Bruce is well aware of the threat they carry on the counter-attack. The Newcastle boss said: "As for Leicester, away from home, maybe it suits them better because they can play slightly on the counter-attack and if you leave spaces in behind, Jamie Vardy, who seems to be getting younger rather than older, is as good as you're going to play against as a centre forward. He's bright and alive but right the way through the team they've got some very good players. However, if we play like we did against Liverpool then we've proved we can match anybody in the league."
There's a much more familiar look to Leicester today, with seven regulars returning to the fold after Rodgers made wholesale changes for the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace last week. James Maddison is amongst those making their return, while Kasper Schmeichel, James Justin, Jonny Evans and Harvey Barnes are the only players to keep their place in the team.
Steve Bruce makes TWO changes to the Newcastle side that held Liverpool to a goalless draw in midweek. Sean Longstaff partners his brother Matty in midfield, while Miguel Almiron is also restored to the side. Jacob Murphy drops to the bench and Isaac Hayden drops out altogether.
Newcastle XI: Darlow, Yedlin, Fernandez, Schar, Clark, Ritchie, S Longstaff, M Longstaff, Almiron, Joelinton, Wilson.. subs: Dubravka, Dummett, Carroll, Shelvey, Gayle, Hendrick, Krafth, Manquillo, Murphy. /// Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Justin, Fofana, Evans, Castagne, Ndidi, Albrighton, Tielemans, Maddison, Barnes, Vardy.. subs: Ward, Soyuncu, Iheanacho, Perez, Amartey, Under, Mendy, Praet, Thomas.
